Hi guys, I'm new to the forum and to Huskies. I have an 08 610 and so far i love it. But I have a quick question...

Ever since I bought my bike the engine seems a little noisy. I came from an inline 4 so i'm not quite sure how much noise it should make. At first i thought it was just the heat shield rattling and then i thought it was the valves rattling. I just adjusted the valves. Intakes seemed slightly loose while the exhaust was slightly tight. Bike has about 700 miles on it. Put it all back together and still has a rattle. Did i just not do it right or could it be something else or is this just how they are supposed to sound?

The noise from valves is usually a steady tick, tick, ticking. Relatively easy to hear. You probably know that, you are adjusting your own valves.

I too have a new 610 and to me it seems quiet, but i am coming from other single cylinder bikes.

Just make sure you have a clean airfilter, correctly adjusted valves, and the right amount of oil and you are good.

check the cam chain adjuster once in awhile too.

My 610 motor is kinda noisy, too. The heatshield needs to be tightened down every now and again. I'm about ready to rip it off, wrap the headers and be done with it. Since my filter, valves, oil, etc are always good, I'm just going to accept as musical accompaniment to my adventures.

BTW, welcome to the Cafe, jwfoulke

They do make a little noise, but nothing compared to my 05 450X. That thing sounded like a bunch of bolts in a coffee can.

Hi there.. I'm new here as well with an 07 610sm... I've been having this rattling as well.. turns out one of the bolts from the mid-heatshield sheared off..

so it's wrattling until I wrap the mid-pip lol

I was wondering about this myself. I have an '09 and it sounds like a POS. I accepted it as normal because it was loud from day 1. The noise is on the left side of the motor. It's really loud when I first start it, and then I can hear something release and it quiets down a little. I get some raised eyebrows from my riding buddies because it sounds so unusual, like something is too loose. Gets louder as the engine warms up.

check the cam chain! my 06 610 was very noisy! upon inspection i realized my old cam chain was 1/2inch too long and found mucho damage! needed parts and a word of advice, put together a list of parts before tackling it.

mine has been loud from day one, tons of noises from the auto decompression to the motor clunking to the chirping the carb makes.... Oil is always clean and no metal in the filters or drain plug so I don't worry too much.

Don't forget that the auto decompession unit will rattle if the idle is too low. If the sound goes away above idle, that would probably be the culprit. But those damn shields......

So ....." they all do that" ;)

Mine, too, especially the startup rattle which quickly goes away. Quite startling the first time I started it cold inside the garage. Sounds bad.

OTOH I was at a SuperMoto event last weekend and saw one of those dual pipe SMR450s and it sounded like my old Honda SL100. Quietest thing on the track.

Something on the 610 that is surprisingingly noisy is the floating rear brake rotor. Start the bike and push on it with your hand or foot and see if some of the noise goes away. They are definitely noisy bikes overall, though.

I found that the quality of fuel greatly affects overall engine noise, particularly from idle to around 2500 RPM. Lower octane/cheap fuel makes the motor knock a bit. If I run Sunoco 93 or 94 then the motor is pretty quiet.

Can someone maybe post a video of said noises so we all can figure out if it’s normal or not ?
My bike doesn’t make any “out of the ordinary” noises that I wouldn’t expect it to make but maybe I’m missing something ?

I can probably post a vid tomorrow. My bike only has 375 miles.

If you want to pinpoint the source of the noise, go to Autozone and get a mechanics stethoscope.

When I got my 610 the PO said the heat shield rattled so bad he just took it off. I mentioned that I might reinstall it and he said "nah, it sticks out so far you're more likely to burn your leg with it on."

So I left it off and zinged all the brackets off so the pipe looks like nothing is missing.

Go to youtube and listen to some of the other 610's that people make videos of. I bet you'll feel better - I did. And if you want some noise, try a KTM 625SX. IT sounds like the paint shaker at LOWE'S :)

Gotta brand new 630 Sumo and just noticed that there´s a kind of grating whining sound when I decrease power and let the engine do the braking. Stops when I declutch. Seems to be coming from either the cylinder head or the clutch. Just heard from an owner who had a valve shim come loose and rattle around.
