Starting problems on 09 TE450 when hot

Hello All

Small electric start issue

Have a new te450 09 that seems to run great. Have just over 50 miles on it with power up kit. Whenever I stop to take photo or break, can't get the bike to start back up. It wants to turn over but as soon as give little gas it dies. Let bike sit for awhile and it starts up in couple tries.

When it is cold, starts up right away. First try usually

Anyone else had similar issue?

Try unplugging the water temp sensor wires and give it a go.

I've been having the same issue with my 10 TE250. It now has about 250 miles and I've been having this problem for the last 100 miles or so. It usually starts ok when cold but out in the trails when hot it is like the battery was dead. I can't believe I need to unplug the water temp sensor everytime I need to start the bike when hot...the bike was running equally hot before the issue surfaced and it was starting ok with the e-start.

Cyd your bike will loosen up after break in- 500-600 miles or so. However, my bike also did not like the heat at times and benifitted from decreasing the CO values. What set up are you running? What insert is in the exhaust? (if it has the euro spark arrestor "dbkiller" this will often make the bike too rich).

the suggestion of the water temp sensor was because if the sensor goes 'bad" then it will tell the ecu the wrong thing and correct for the wrong conditions.

Try turning the air bypass scre in 1/8th turn when you find a hard hot start situation to see if it helps.

The temp sensor can go bad causing the bike to do this. It is a cheap fix to replace. Try un-plugging the wire and see if it starts. That is one indication it is bad. If you have access to Ibeat take a look at the temp. reading, mine read full hot when the bike was cold. I ordered two of them just in case but have not had a problem since replacing the original.

Cydonia: With that few of miles on the bike I would take it to the dealer and see if they can help. You may want to tell them about the temp. sensor as I don't know if there is a tech bulletin ever written on this or not.

Thank you all for the great input. I would love to take to a dealer but nearest one is about 2 hours away. May have to wait a bit. Will try the air bypass screw and water temp sensor. After that, its a road trip to Reno as closest dealer.

I thought at first it was something to do with the clutch lever. Since I put new grips on that were little longer than stock, the clutch lever was not able to pull in far enough to disengage the security feature so bike would start. Tried several positions and have to squeeze in and up toward grip to get it to disengage. Thought not having solid contact was not allowing enough power somehow to starter? Going to change the positions of the clutch mount and the blinker/light switch to get better angle for lever to pull in all the way.

Unfortunately my mechanical knowledge is limited. Trial by error.

100% sure its the sensor. My brothers 310 did the same. We got the sage advise from the cafe husky gurus here, took it to the dealer who replaced it under warranty and also did a recheck of the electronics. Works like a dream now.

There is also problem with pore trothle response caused byt the tempsencor. We have change couple of sensors becuse of this problem.

The one on my '08 610 has evidently failed.

Do I need to put anything on the threads of the new sensor when installing it? Antiseize maybe?

Won't hurt, brass threads in aluminum hole.

i have an 09 te 450 and it dosnt like to start in gear when hot, but in neutral it starts fine. just a little clutch drag. im not sure if this helps but good luck!

Hello. I have a TE 450 2010 and i have problem for starting when it´s hot.
Could you tell if the "water temp sensor", is the piece that in spanish is called "TERMOSTATO"?

i had the same thing with my 09 450 when new......a little trick that worked for me was, no gas, hold the decomprestion lever in and let it out while the engine was cranking....may sound strange but always worked...we have an ibeat tuner and laptop, and with ibeat, was able to dial in the efi to have the bike start right up at any temp....both mine and my wifes bike start and run perfect after tuning...if you are interested in help with yours, we also are in ca. and headed up to june lake area mid oct. to go riding and camping for a week.

Same problem on mine not long after purchasing new 2010TE450, dealer re-adjusted auto decompressor valve, now no problems starting hot.

Yesterday on the real tight trails, about 80F outside...my 09 TE 510 (900 miles or so) refused to start. starter was working and spark was there... but no fuel.

Fuel pump did no sound normal at all! it sounded like fuel pump was not spinning...it was pretty scary, being out in the middle of nowhere.

so, long story short...20 minutes of cool down and bike started right up and rode like nothing happened. and fuel pump sounded normal.

any ideas as to what happened are appreciated!

1st- ensure you don't have a check valve on your gas cap (one way/whatever) especially not the one that came stock. It will cause vacume sometimes and can cause strain on the pump. THey sometimes build presure as well. I usually use a straight hose-

(this could be misinterpretted as a symptom of being hot) since it will consequently build pressure and get hot- and the bike will then cool and consquently loose tank presure at a similiar rate. Riding on the street may not build as much presure versus offroad and not show this problem (like durring initial break-in)- why some people may not have this problem and then get it in some real technical conditions and have problems.

2nd- other than that- any time a fuel pump "kinda" works is a sign that it is going bad. Either it works or it doesn't: because its faulty or is not recieving an electrical charge from it's circuit.

fueling properly for temps- is a separate issue; whether it be due to a sensor or incorrect mapping. My bike has been performing well in heat and cold since I changed my CO settings with Ibeat 2-3 years ago. So they aren't necessarily "prone" to heat problems.

thanks! to me it almost sounded like fuel pump was seizing up...

it's like it's was so hot, that it jammed and would not spin! but after cool down, it worked just fine...

there was no vacuum problem for sure, i just have regular hose for a vent.

I don't have problem with fueling or anything.. when it runs, everything runs fine.

another- thought then:

Was your bike low on fuel? The pumps sound way different when they are priming dry- they kinda go whoooouue Whoooee- but then sound normal again- happens every time you take the tank off and the line gets air.

If you were low but not that low on fuel- maybe your pump jumped out of its cradel and then settled- did you safety wire it?

If you had a "full" tank- I'd be concerned your pump has issues- maybe try some good Fuel Additive like Seafoam or something and cross your fingers...

I'd be cycling the pump a few times and litting it idle in the garage every night to check it between rides and before any big commitments just to gain confidence in it again...

good luck- worst case senario- you have to get a CA Cycleworks pump....

My guess is overheating of something was the cause. safetywiring of pump was done, the was plenty of gas and no vacuum for sure. gas is always fresh... I will probably swap the pump just in case... beats pushing bike for miles...
