The manual says to turn the mixture screw fully clockwise then bring it back 1.5 turns. The screw was already set to fully clockwise. When I backed the screw out about 1/4 turn, gasoline started pouring out from under the carburator. Has this happened to anyone else?

    Thx

Sounds like ya may be fiddling with the drain screw, bottom left of the carb pointing horizontally leftwards. The fuel screw is toward the engine cylinder side of the carb, center front of the float bowl and pretty difficult to get to, you'll need a very short, narrow bladed screw driver to do so. It is deeply inset in a cast cylindrical dilly at the front of the float bowl. If that is the one yer messing with then I dunno what is up.

When on the left side of the bike facing the carb, I am turning the screw on the right under the bowl. Are you referring to the Black Idle Screw?

If you are turning a screw at the bottom of the bowl and you can see it from the outside of the carb that is the drain screw.

#46 in that diagram. You are looking for #32, but the diagram is somewhat misleading. If you will look at the exploded float bowl view you will see an oval hole at the front center of the bowl, cast into it forming a vertical cylinder. That is where the fuel screw #32 is, or passes through. It is oriented vertically and not visible without turning the carb. It is difficult to get to and subsequently is often replaced with one like in this picture to make things easier...

Some good basic fuel screw info in that link as well.

So if you are turning a screw that you do not have to cuss to get at and fuel is pouring out of yer carb, that is the drain screw.

Thx evilfirbolg, no way can I get my hand in there. I'll have to get the special screw.

Glad to be of help. There are special screwdrivers made to access that booger but a new screw is better. Get a brass tipped one, like the one JD jetting, I believe they are of better quality and more consistent.

I guess you have to take the carb off to get the old screw out and put the new screw in? Can you shut off the fuel cock and use the twisty screw driver to get the old screw out?

With the right short screwdriver you can get it out in place. Or ya loosen the hose clamps on the back of carb to airbox and front of carb to head and just rotate the carb. No need to remove it or disconnect the linkage. You don't really have to do that for just the fuel screw but if ya wanna re-jet you will, and to do all that properly you will need to remove the seat, tank and side covers. It is not difficult, and something ya might as well get used to doing. If ya find an appropriate small screwdriver that could remove then there really is no reason to remove, just adjust. The stock fuel screw is of high quality, just a pain to get to without the right tool. But with the right tool it is no problem. If you do decide to change, pay close attention to the spring, small washer and oring that come out with it. Make sure they are put back on the new screw in the same manner and make sure the oring is pushed down around the screw a bit and not just sitting on top of the seat, will give ya big headache there. And yeah, get a manual, first, if ya don't have one. The factory workshop manual isn't the most clear piece of literature but still a valuable reference.
