My 610 always started in gear. Now if I stall in traffic, I have to find neutral to start it. Being carbed, the idle knob has to be played with quite a bit to keep it from stalling. Espescially with weather conditions.
When I hit the start button when it's in gear, it does nothing. Like the battery is dead. When I put it in neutral it fires right up. Something is cutting off the power to the starter. Would/could it be in the computer?
I don't know, but my SM610 starts right up when in gear Is your clutch cable stretched out? Like maybe the bike thinks the clutch isn't pulled in so it won't start? Mine is carb'd as well and has no idling/stalling issues.
I'll try adjusting the cable. That sounds like its possible. The weather here in Pa. is so finicky. It will be humid then drys out or gets cold. These all seem to affect the idle.. Thx.
I tried adjusting the cable, but it still won't turn over. I remember hitting the start button once with the bike in 1st and I didn't have the clutch pulled in. It lurched forward, so I think it turns whether the clutch is in or out.
Any mechanics out there? When I pull up on the shift lever in 1st gear (very slightly) toward neutral, it makes contact/connection and will start.
Hold ona few minutes...I'm gonna go out to the garage and look at mine and see if there's a safety switch down near the shifter...
Underneath the black plastic cover with the H on it is the contact for the neutral safety switch. The actual switch is the wire going into the clutch perch. It sounds like the contact up top is not working properly. The contact down below is probably working, since it starts when the bike is actually in neutral.
Thx WoodsChick. Did you take the plastic cover off to find out. If you did that is very nice of you to do this! I'll check it out. Thx again!!
Pull the wires up at the clutch lever, and connect them to one another... See if that makes a difference. I did that with mine when new and taped them away since I hate clutch safety switches...
Right on! Glad to hear it's working for you once again. Now you can work on that stalling issue For what it's worth, I try not to start my bike in gear
I have the clutch cable adjusted to max. I have also found that my gears are shifting much smoother and neutral is really easy to find now. It does start in gear now, but I don't like starting it in gear. My low fuel light and gas pump icon are now working too. Must be a ghost in the machine!!
