Been wanting to try my own so..... This was the perfect opportunity since it’s my boys new to him 85.... not sure how ready he is for an 85 so didn’t want to spend a bunch building it.... Sheet of HDPE 1/8” plastic was $10 so I went after it over the course of a week.... Cut template Cut plastic little large Fit and trim Drill holes Bike- $300 Chain & sprockets - $75 Hand guards -$0 swapped from 65 Front m/c rebuild - $35 screwed up first seal New levers - $20 Carb kit - $15 Rear wheel bearings- $20
Ya I’ve had a few held on with zip ties I want to use bigger ones just needed to get some..... We will see
Nice work. The aluminum skid on my 177 was so smashed up it was a pain to get on/off so I decided to make a plastic one for it. Mine is 3/8" thick, a bit harder to work with but I was able to countersink the fasteners so it would be smooth underneath. The first one I made had the side guards bolted on, which lasted about 2 hours V.2 I heated it up and formed them in my press brake.
I’ve got some 1/4” too... First test today on bigger bike went good..... Smashed it a few times slid across a few logs.. no broked zip ties..
Ride 2 on the bash plate.... hit one huge log that actually dented pipe (part of our EX track) and broke a mount bolt.... plate stayed the course and didn’t work loose or even leave a mark on it.... seems to be working good may go ahead and make the much thicker one.....
Nice action shots! You know it's a good time when you can see the smile in the helmet just looking at the eyes. Looks like he's totally ready for that 85 judging by the roost.
It took about 10 minutes and now he’s gone..... we have a half mile EX course in back yard..... ready to hit the trails now
Hope he has fun with and is safe. I can’t believe how fast those 85s are. My first job was at an mx track flagging and operating the gate. Saw more kids get hurt in the 85 class than anyone else. Looks like he’s got it down though! Nice skid plate too! Is he coming off a 65?
Ya he’s been on a 65 for 2 yrs before that a 50... we really don’t do Moto in fact I wish the enduros here were open to non street legal bikes he loves them..... Probably going to hit a nhha race or 2 with him this year..... having a good time riding and he likes longer races.... my goal is in a few years Tecate....
an 85cc motocrosser has the same power to weight ratio as a 500cc motorcrosser. thats why you see kids getting clobbered on them. those lil buggers aint no joke !!!
No they aren’t! Since he’s coming off a two stroke with a six speed and he’s used to the two stroke power my guess is he’ll be just fine a family that used to frequent the track I worked at attempted to transition their son off of a crf 70 to an 85 and it didn’t go well. The ones that came off 65s seemed to do a lot better handling them. Obviously a lot of this depends on the kid but some bikes are just more serious than others.
These things are no joke.... pipe as heck and serious power to weight ratio..... trick is teaching throttle and clutch control early..... so many on 85s either started on them and probably finish on them and are just learning to how fast they can go.... My boy likes the "tough" tight trails and and really don't care much for moto.... I can't wait to get him on a 125 at a good enduro.....
