I have a 08 TE610. The other day I went through a small river, and completely drenched the bike. http://lh5.ggpht.com/_7qrXpr4Myps/SpNFRnLPlwI/AAAAAAAAFyY/g3akf0_z7Eg/s800/IMG_2897.JPG The next day things went wonky. The bike starts and runs fine. There is power to the Battery when It's running so I think the alternator/regulator are ok. The speedo LCD display blue back light works, but the display is blank. After the bike is on a while, the neutral, turn signal, and high-beam indicator light up. Initially, I thought I just fried the speedo, however in addition the horn the lights and the turn signals don't work. I started thinking about it and I can't figure out why the horn would be affected by the speedo. So I concentrated on that, and I found that the horn had no positive. Tracing that wire back (yellow/green) it seems like it goes to left side of the bike to one of the three doohicky's that I figure are either relay's or maybe circuit breakers? If I swap them out, the bike will not start. If I put them back the bike still will not start, but if I wait a few minutes then it will. SO I'm figuring that these things are self resetting circuit breakers?? I don't know how to test further, how do I test those doohickies? Is there a wiring diagram online anywhere? I also tried just powering the horn directly with 12v and it makes a short very faint beep. What's that all about?
My Battery failed a load test, so I replaced that with no effect. Oh Well, the new Battery (odyssey pc310) is several pounds lighter and starts the bike instantly so it's a good thing. Finally, after three frustrating days of fiddling I finally gave up and took it to George thinking he'd fix it for me. Instead, he was exceptionally generous with his time and gave me a little encouragement. In the end, the fix was so simple I'm embarrassed about it. I had checked the main fuses on the left of the bike, but I didn't realize there were also fuses on the right (duh!!) I still don't know exactly what's up, but long story short the headlight bulb was shorting and blowing that fuse. The speedo backlight, the neutral light and the turn signal light all came on, so I had mistakenly thought the speedo was powered but broken. That one 20A Fuse runs the speedo, headlight, signals, and horn. Grrrr, this whole stupid thing has shaken my confidence as a world traveler.
If this was almost any other bike, there would be a plethora of documentation that would have pointed you in the right direction. But it's the damn TE610. A hoot to ride, but sometimes it can seem like we're all working in a vacuum. The owner's manual and repair manuals are somewhat comical. You just found another small issue with the bike and by posting it here, the rest of us will be a little wiser. :thumb translation: don't let your confidence be shaken. You fixed it. Many a world traveler has put out the call for assistance with a repair.
My 09TE450's speedo is half dead... no its dead.... All I did was ride 2 days in the rain- went blank- all fuses are good- everything else has power as it should- only works if I turn on blinkers- Whats up with that? upon turning the key- it pauses displays 2.2 then initiates 3 secconds later it goes blank- I had it appart its completely dry- checked connections and tested- seemes internally it is shorting- I may try to totally disconnect the indicator wires (high beam and blilnkers from the computer- snip snip- if that doesn't work I will have to buy a trailtech vector.
