09 comes with PU- its the stock pipe- just remove Cat (08's you had to buy a whole separate slip on)

You have to take the can(muffler) off the midpipe- 2 springs a couple bolts holding to the frame- so you have room to work with-
then you will see the cat in the end of the pipe of the can- it will slide out. reattach.. done

When purchasing a used '09 bike, is there any way to tell if the Cat has already been removed without taking the pipe apart?

Well if the pipe gets extraordinarily hot right about where the stock heat shield stops by the side panel- chances are its still there. Its easy enough to check though by taking apart- I promise it won't take more than 15 minutes:thumbsup::D

I'm not sure exactly what you mean.

The circlip holds in the spark arrestor not the cat. On most 2009 bikes the cat is a honey combed insert inside the pipe, that insert is what is supposed to be removed.

The cat is at the inlet end of the muffler at the mid pipe.
