09' TC510 Broken Kick Start Shaft

    Hello all,

    Today at a race in LaGrange, Ca., my kick start shaft completely broke off and kick starter fell to the ground. Has anyone heard of this problem? Should this be covered by Husqvarna? If not, how much money and trouble will this take to fix?

    I realize my response isn't really going to help you since it wasn't a Husky, but I'll tell you my story anyway...

    This very thing happened to me 3 times on the 2001 Yamaha WR250F that I bought brand new. One of the new shafts broke after about 50 miles. Yamaha paid for the first shaft, then refused to accept any responsibility thereafter. I pushed the issue, never having this problem with any other bike, and they sent a representative from Yamaha out to look at it. They basically said I didn't know how to kick-start a bike (even though they didn't actually witness me kickstarting it...because the shaft was broken) and wouldn't help me. Funny how all the other kick-start bikes I've ever had over the last 23 years have never had this same problem.

    Did they say what they thought you were doing wrong while starting your bike? Thats a crazy story. Do you still have the bike?
    Anyway, the part is $100 and I'm sure the cost to have it repaired will be an arm and leg.

    No, they didn't say, and I sold the bike almost 2 years ago right before I got my 610. There was a certain drill required to get the WR to start, and the owner of the shop ran me through it before I took it home. I started it on the 2nd kick no problem. I think they just didn't want to take responsibility for it. I thought it was odd that 3 shafts broke right in a row, and then I didn't have any problems with it after that. Was it a bad batch of parts? I don't know...:excuseme:

    We replaced the shafts ourselves. We didn't have to split the cases or anything. IIRC, it was pretty straightforward.

    check to see if your bike is covered by a recall...some '07's and '08's were known to have this issue. Thought this was remedied by 2009... your dealer should be able to take care of the problem through Husky.

    I have had 2 friends brake the kick shaft on there kx250's. It was a fairly easy job. just do it your self, it doesnt take that long. just drain the oil and coolant and take off the side cover. Its just a few bolts from there just remember how you take it apart the trickiest part is putting the spring back in right.
