As some of you know, I'm transitioning from my '07 TE250 to an '09 TE310. Unfortunately, I'm suffering some new bike blues.

At 190 miles I checked the valve clearances. The right side exh was at .007 and the right side int was at .005, perfect.

The left however, was at a snug .006 for the exh, and .003 on the int. I bought new shims and moved them to .008 and .005 respectively.

A few miles after this change, the engine started developing what sounds like a valve clatter, as if one or more of the rockers has a HUGE clearance. This clatter got worse for a while until it stabilized. After letting the engine cool off, it sounds normal until it's up to full temp. It never got any worse, and it doesn't effect the engine's performance, but it's a "somethin' ain't right" kind of sound. Having ridden the TE250 for so long, I know what it *should* sound like, after all, this is just a big-bore 250.

After returning home and cleaning the bike, I pulled the valve cover off expecting to find a (my) mistake. All four valves still measure the exact same as before: L-exh .008; R-exh .007; and both intakes at .005

What gives? Do I have a bigger problem than valve clearances? :banghead:

This may be a  question, but when the engine is hot, when I hit the starter button, the engine rolls over just a touch and stops, like the starter doesn't have enough ummph to push it past the compression stroke. If I let go of the button, and push it again, the engine fires right up. It does this every time. Is this an example of needing to use the hot-start lever? FWIW, I never, ever needed it on the 250, and it never occured to me that the hot-start lever my be needed when I was riding.

Are the new gas caps prone to leaking? Mine seems to have a mind of it's own. Seals fine one time, then leaks like a seive the next...

    Signed,
Not Yet In Love w/ the 310.

I would look at your compression release under the valve cover and make sure all is good with it. Might be the noise and issue.

As for the gas cap be real careful the rubber part is fully seated before installing the cap.

    Kelly,

What exactly would I be looking for on the compression release mechanizzzzzm?

That is looks fine, is hitting the landing on the rocker arm square and enough to move it. Take the valve cover off, leave the key off and turn the bike over with the kick starter. The decomp cam should engage the rocker arm landing square and fully and open the valve slightly. You should be able to kick the motor over with your hand.

I'm having the exact same issue

I put the 300 kit on my 07... Talked to George at Uptite and Kelly is dead on about this... I put a new autodecomp on mine and it makes that sound (it stops making it at higher RPM..)

George told me the new Autodecomp will make a slapping sound for a while somthing about spring pressure and this will wear in..

I also get the 2 start issue you were talking about...
