17 inch rear tyre ?

rebuilding or 390 split the wheels for powdercoating,tryed to source tyres and unable to obtain 17 inch tyres aaaargh,what are you guys running or hav you swapped rear rims for 18 inch if so what off and what uses same spoke pattern cheers for help.

Kenda, IRC, Bridgestone, Maxxis, are just a few that still make 17's.

looked on that site,my bike i think should be 5.50 17 wich i think is about 140 80 17,correct guys they list a few tyres wich are 130 wich would be ok but cant seem to find any in uk

I prefer to change the whole wheel. I like the hub which has spokes of equal length instead of the conical hub which is on most of the 17 inch wheels I have. Were you able to undo the spokes? how many did you have to cut? I don't have any 390 360 stuff doesn't seem compatible with the later stuff up to 1983 or so If the 390 is like the 420 auto then you can go up to 1983 on the wheel without changing the backing plate and all the way up to 1988 if you get the right backing plate and right cam and arm to put in it. Somewhere around 1984 the shoes got thinner and the plate thicker. Then the arm and cams changed as the rear went monoshock. Some cr stuff has thinner shoes mine from 1981 or so but the wheel has been interchanged with no problem.

As for the tires, I kind of like the Pirelli MT 21 rear. It is a dot knobby and most folks don't like them they have some very big blocks of rubber and are not great in mud. If you ride on your own property though they don't rip things up as much as most choices. All depends on how you ride.

changing hub and rim not really option now as they hav been powdercoated,but planning on maybe doing couple twinshock races for bit of fun so that is why asking about tyre sizes,and i managed to remove all spokes front and back and save nipples,come of really easy great condition,think going to replace stainless spokes and nipples anyway.

Kenda and Chen Shin are good , and pretty cheap as well.
last 17 inch Kenda i used lasted quite a while.
check an older Honda dealer, the older XR,s had a 17 inch rear as well.

what sizes you been running,wanted to get close to originall sizes as possible cheers.

You can get a Mitas 17 inch rear tyre from Bill Brown, priced at about 40 pounds. It is a pretty good tyre, I had the 18 inch version on my last Husky. It is the tyre I will get when my wheels are ready.

may give him a go,as i said i can get the vee rubber in 450 and kings in 510,not sure what they are like

As far as I know, this particular Mitas is basically the same as the old Barum tyres and I used one on my 84 Husky a couple of years ago. Seemed to grip ok and lasted for ages. Not expensive either so worth a try.

I personally like the 17 inch rear wheel set up, and it is a shame there isn't a better tyre choice. I will stick with it whilst I can still get a reasonable quality tyre in that size.

Are tubes easy to get in 17 inch sizes and what has worked best for you? I have a slow leak in my rear tire and will be shopping around real soon. Might as well get the best.....

Continental have a good choice of 17 inch tubes. Not sure where you can get them in the US, but no doubt there is a supplier somewhere..

I am running a 140/80-17 michelin on my 430.
Michelin also makes a tube specifically for this tire (Michelin air stop)
You should have no trouble finding this in the UK.

Can you tell us which Michelin tyre you are using? I have checked their website and cannot find a 17 inch rear tyre. Thanks

I purchased the tire on Ebay.

I blieve that Michelin makes a 140/80-17 Desert tire that is D.O.T. rated.

I have tryed several and like the IRC best.
