Has anyone put 17"s front and rear on a TR650, Im thinking of getting a Strada but Id like it more if it had 17s front and rear. I plan on using it more as a dual sport then a Adventure bike. Any thoughts?

A 17" front? The Terra is 21" front as well as the F650GS Dakar. Even the lesser adventure versions of F650GS have 19" fronts and wheels available. So, I'd be one that wouldn't go with a 17" front for off-road if I had an easy choice....which I did. :)

I had that choice in converting my Strada and went with a used 17" F650GS rear (pretty easy to find) and almost went with a similar used 19" front (again pretty easy to find). I opted for a custom 21" front.

Consider a G650X front wheel (17" cast supermoto version). Strada rear.

Funny thing, I have an x-moto and am trying to figure out how hard it is going to be to fit a 19" wheel to it

Some info on the x-moto wheel, the bearings are 20mm ID x 47 OD x 14. The brake mounting bolts are ~80mm center to center. Apparently the wheel is not made by bmw, but is a marchesini and used on a variety of aprilias also.

You'll have to take some measurements and see. I can help a bit as I have that wheel on my bmw and already posted a few measurements a couple posts prior to this one.

My guy at the dealership is working with a shop in Cali that uses Talon hubs and Excel wheels to make custom onee, I'd rather have spoked wheels because the bike going to be leaving the street as often as It can and I'd also like to keep the weight down as much as I can. If talon doesn't make hubs then we will be using new OEM hubs, custom spokes and excel wheels. This way I'll have a set of Dirt only wheels and a set of Dirt/Street SM wheels.

so has anybody done this? I have a terra and I want to drop it down on 17s but Im curious what it will do to the geometry of the bike.

Has the terra a 17 or 18 rear wheel ( there are both apparently). I am pretty sure that the STRADA will handle much better with a 17" on the road. The front big wheel gets really hard to turn in once you start to push the Strada on bitumen. My problem is how a 17 will effect the ABS. I want the abs to work properly. The big thing is you can get MUCH better road tyres for 17" front wheels than 19's. If you ride a Strada and don't care about the ABS ( many don't like it) , I would believe that a 17" front will be VERY superior as a front with high quality front and rear tyres.
Of course that would then show up the less than ideal rear shockie.

Heres what it would look like on 17". 180/55-17 rear 120/70-17 front. image.jpg image.jpg

There is absolutely no need for a rear tyre that big on a bike of this, weight, speeed and power. i will be a de performance move.
    160 is about right.
looks like a good move for the front though. front has a better poise and would allow more slide through the triple clamps if you wanted a steeper angle. What is the shock and where did you get it. looks like an Ohlins.

Well the 180 is probably on the fatest side of the scale. But it allso depends on what type of profile your tire has. The bike as now is gonna be used on track days and for that purpose its gonna work just fine. Its a bit take what you have on the wheel department.
If you refer to the rear shock lying there its a ducati 996 ohlins. But it wont fit on it unless you make a "low" exhaust. If it clears the gas tank. Ill be using an ohlins ilx.

Can't agree on the 180/55 being fine. Had an f800r bmw and the low profile tyres run out of edge way before the front. I went back to a 170/60 and got way more edge grip. For this bike I personally think a 120/60 and a 160/60 Really good tyre set would be even better. The bigger the tyre the more weight. And wheel/tyre weight will really effect the turning, braking and acc. big time on a bike with this lower scale power/weight ratio. I would like to here how it goes with the 17" though and the geometry you end up happy with. off the top of my head I reckon you wil have to reduce the travel front and back to 150mm or less or it will feel really rocking horse under brakes and there will be a lot of dive and weight transfer.
