Hi, my 77 360 won’t engage first properly and when setting off there is a grinding noise like gears not engaging correctly, on draining the oil, ATF, I can see metal filings on the drain plug. Bike hasn’t been used for a few years but primary drive looks ok on investigation. Any thoughts? I’ve done about 20 miles on it in the last few days and this has just started to happen!
    Thanks

    John

    John,
You will need to pull out the main shaft assembly. It could be just the spring or retainer plate or clip on the end has come loose or failed. But if it has done this for some time the 1st gear and the main shaft engagement splines may also be damaged and need repair. The gear and shaft splines can take a bit of abuse but eventually will need repaired. Either way you will need to pull out the main shaft assembly.

Hi Marty, that’s a great help thanks! Will strip it tomorrow and see what’s going on. The bike was no. 306 in the 1977 isdt and I don’t think it’s had a lot of use since then. Only 1 other set of scrutineers marks.

    All the best

    John.

I hope you don't mind me saying but ATF is not good for Autos, i always use the original spec oil which is much thinner and copes better with the extreme heat generated by all those slipping clutches even though it is expensive and not easy to find. There are also several suspension oils that are similar spec.
Unfortunately you will almost certainly need to replace or repair the gearbox mainshaft and engagement gear, once they start grinding and not engaging properly they are beyond saving unless you are a very skilled welder and machinist. I believe there are several people in the USA that can do this.
When its repaired ride it like you stole it, much kinder to the clutches to be locked up!! They are great bikes to ride.

That is your one way bearing or sprag clutch for kick starting, I mine from Jef Bens in Belgium, a great supplier of Husky parts.

    John,
Let us know how you get on with getting the 3 bearings in and the one way the right way ? I have exactly the same issue, I’ve all the parts but not started the strip and rebuild yet. I had enough of the broken parts still in situ to get the one way right way noted, I’d need to go out to the shed and look as to what is is now as I can’t remember. Can you take a few picks of the process when you start?
    Cheers

Fairly easy to get the engine crankshaft sprag the right way round. work out in your head which way the crankshaft clutch turns when kicked , slide on the clutch, if it doesn't engage when turned by hand but will turn backwards there is a fair chance you have it the wrong way round! Unfortunately it can also mean the crankshaft stub is too worn for the sprag to grip. The 360/390 engine manual also shows which way round it goes.

    ..........a spare.

I buy parts when i find them, no rush as its a project, but will have a complete spare engine when its done. My '77 auto is complete and running, this is a spare i picked up.

Did you get all three bearings from IBTL? That is a super cheap price. Just one of the roller bearings over here is 40$!

There are a few Uk suppliers who have the needle rollers from between £7 and £16 depending on brand, I bought the ina’s as it’s a good name, though not from IBTL. IBTL are the official Uk distributors of the sprag bearings, I’ll call them on Monday and see if they supply the needle rollers as well. They’re a well known company in Leeds, I pay by card so quite happy to get costs and pass on details to anyone wishing to purchase. I’ll ship over to USA or any other country no problem. Very happy to help!! Bearingshopuk and simplybearings are 2 other good suppliers of general use bearings at very reasonable cost.
