1980 390CR 35mm to 40mm fork upgrade

Hey guys,

I've had a bit of a read up and searched through the archives to get me started, but to confirm:

Will these forks listed here (1984 WR forks), be the correct forks to fit onto my 390 to upgrade from 35mm?

I've read about using the shorter dampening rods from the WRs to trim the overall travel and height of the forks?
I've had a look at the upper triples on 40mm CR forks and they don't use the rubber dampener arrangement which I would like to keep so I can retain my existing bar and clamp setup.

I'm not 100% sure on everything that needs to be done so every bit of help will make this easier for me.... and hopefully others.

I'm looking for essentially a bolt on affair for my current standard 390 front rim (exception of machining up some spacers to centralize and restoration/gold valving)

Any triple clamp set from 1978(Timken necks only) up through 1989 minimum are the correct height and bearing are the same throughout those years

I believe 85 was the first year that did not use the rubber mounted bars. My 84 wr's still have the rubbers and are in need of repacement.

It has been a while since I did the conversion for my 80 CR 390 but if I remember correctly I used a set of forks off of a 82 or 83 CR 250 or 430. I tried to use the original hub but it wouldn't work. I tried spacers ets,
but the wheel would not line up with forks, brake, etc. I eventually ended up buying the same year hub and had Buckannons re-lace the front rim. The nice thing about that is it now has the dual brake system. You will
also need to longer front axle as well. It ended up being more of a job than I intended it to be. More $ too. But as you can see it came out really well.

yeah, it would be much easier to just use the whole front end off the 40mm bike. the braking upgrade would be worth it

I did this swap already with a disc brake front end. Nicer ride plus the ever braking.
