1984 CR430 L/C

This is only going to be a short first post so I apologise for the lack of detail yet...

History:

Bought just a frame, engine, seat (base and foam), and 1 Radiator from a guy who said it was a 250 (as it only had one Radiator). Without seeing it I said I would have it and basically drove to the other side of the UK to pick it up. When he brought the frame out I thought that the barrel looked bigger... when he then showed me the rad.... sure enough there was only one but it just happened to be the n/s! What I was expecting was a 1984 250 L/C but it turned out to be a 1984 WR 400...

I paid the man like I said I would and brought it back home....

Since then I have been using ebay to get bits (biggest bit was a whole donor 87 430) I needed or HVA Factory for those bits which are not out there..

I started this really about 3 weeks ago from the bare frame which was then blue!!

All modifications etc that I have done will follow when I get chance but questions are welcome...

have you thought about slipping cr legs and dampers in the front and dropping the spacers out of the shox for MX?
Actually, they are different forks anyway? or are they plastic covers???

Extend your front brake lever till it's nearly touching the stay arm...gives stronger pull and better feel, bang a zip tie around the front brake cable at the fork dust cover, stops it squeezing into the tyre under hard landings and pulling the brake on full.....not pretty.

the 400 is sensitive to placement of the fork tubes in the clamps so if you need more turning, lift them up 5mm makes a world of difference. same with the rear spring position clips. I run mine for fast stuff 3 from the hardest with the forks flush and at 3 from the bottom for tight 1st - 2nd gear country with the forks pulled up in the clamps.

its a great engine, docile and useable with plenty of rort when you pin it. it will rev hard so don't be scared to spin it up. (check out the utube channel "riders in the scrub" Hopetoun clips) hopefully get some pics of it in action at Farliegh on here.....

The forks are 50mm WP and are slightly shorter than stock HVA forks so I run them to the top of the leg.

The engine is not the original 400 as that is a 6 speed with endure ratios. I have inserted a CR430 5 speed... the ratios are right and I only have one more gear to think about (getting lazy in my old age).

The thought was that the 430 would not run smoother than my 500 and it wouldn't knacker me out so quickly Probably a Boldrick type plan.....

Good suggestion about the front cable

The frame has been modified to take the later Torque arm which in turn has been shortened to suit. I'll document later as I have a shed load of things to do before next week...

I'm going to aboard this baby at Farleigh next week. Hopefully with my new ITC shocks as well.

Not 100% happy with the clean up (see initial posted pics) but I think it's the best I could do.

The next thing was the WR frame did not have a Torque Arm lug.... so I had to make one and then had it welded to the frame....



I had to shorten the later year alloy Torque Arm as the 85 onwards have longer swinging arms. Made sure that I fitted bearings as per the fitting on my 85...

My 86 400 wrx was very fast. I also regret selling it. She ate a kx 250 down the straights.
