1984 wr 400

My buddy has a 1984 wr 400 water cooled, twin shocks, drum brakes. He used the engine out of it years ago in a 1987 auto. My question is, will a engine out of a 1983 or earlyer, air cooled bolt up in this frame and if it will does anybody have one for sale. thanks

On wrlc motor the exhaust cylinder is in the middle. On aircooled the exhaust is a little on the left on the left. You'll have problems.

84 wr 400

OK, we know now that a 83 engine won't work in a 84 frame, but will a 86 wr 400 engine work in a 84 frame. Both are water cooled, but the 84 is twin shocks as the 86 is single shock. Will the motor mounts be the same. thanks

swingarm axles are different sizes.86 being a larger diameter.you will have to press out the case bushings from the 84 engine and press them in the 86 engine. I have an 84 wr400 engine in an 86 430 auto chassis and thats all i had to do. everything else bolts right up.
