I know this has had to have been covered somewhere but I have searched the website and the net with no luck. To save everyone the trouble of repeating themselves, please just point me to the thread that has this info.

The reason I ask is that I'm looking at an '84 250xc and want to make sure it will fill my needs. Thanks.

I cant exactly point to a previous thread. Though I am without any 84 models generally the transmissions may have different ratios and even less than six speeds in some cr models. There is less frame to the rear of the seat on the cr and perhaps no kickstand. The ignition generally has an internal rotor on cr and external one with more windings for lights though still your xc model probably will only put out 35 watts, some wr models have more wires though I am not sure if the total output is much more. I would say the biggest thing is that the suspention on the wr is shorter so they are lower. Other areas you could investigate in the parts sheets might be reeds, carb jets, exhaust parts (i suspect the silencer is significantly different on the cr than the others) the floating rear brake on cr, I suspect I missed something.

I believe, The CR (close ratio) was the motocross model, XC the cross country and the WR (wide ratio) was the enduro.

84 250XC may be liquid cooled as the CR is, WR is air cooled in 84. 84 XC-WR share same transmission- six speed wide ratio. XC has longer travel suspension than the WR, basically same susp. as the CR motocrosser. The XC is a very nice bike for all around use as the XC symbolizes "cross country" as Daniel stated . I have a 84 WR250 that is a WR/XC hybrid of my own. I wanted longer travel suspension than the WR so I put XC suspension on it-love it as my woods bike.

Yeah generally however you really have to go to the parts sheets for the specific models and years. If you cant' find the sheets here or havn't bought them on cd Halls has them on line. I have a cr 500 which had the exact same six speed transmission as an xc 500. Same as wr430 and one of the 250 models if I recall correctly. One might also look at the primary gear set to see if they are different as well. I expected to find a four speed one but didn't. One also can call them course racer and woods racer for those letters.
