I am assembling a pair of '87 forks and am unsure which direction I should install the tapered damping ring. The '88 owners manual I have says to install with the smaller diameter of the ring facing up towards the triple clamps. This doesn't seem correct to me and I think I remember seeing another post questioning this also but now I can't find it. Can anyone confirm the correct position? Thanks. image.jpeg

The small end mates into the large end of the aluminum cup so the HVA interpretation is correct. That aluminum asssembly then slide into the steel with the bottom of that cone against the steel tabs. I had to verify that myself a few years ago
