Frequency of change depends in paert on the type of riding you do and the quality of oil.
In my case I only do single trail stuff with a bit of fire trail blasting. On this premise oil change occurs after every 3 rides circa 350 kms and oil filter changed every second oil change.
    I use a good mid quality semi syn oil-Motul 5100 10/50.
I usually get the valves checked every 2000 kms.
Keep an eye on your air filter and change when necessary.
Try dropping a cap of 2 stroke fully syn oil with every fuel tank top up-keeps valves cushioned and the top end lubed. No smoke or fowled plugs.

You have one oil filter on the right hand side just under the cylinder attached by 3 bolts-2 minutes to replace.
The botom left hand side has 2 filter screens under the gear lever.
The front one is small-note the way it came out and also there is an O ring.
the one next to it actually has 2 screens one inside the other.
If the oil you dump looks pretty clean I only take these out when I change the oil filter ie every second oil change.

I would suggest a radiator flush is a good idea. Use a mix of water and white vinegar-gets rid of the scale then replace with new bike specific coolant. I always flush again with coolant.

I warm her up and put her on the side stand as that is where the side screens face-easier to pour out. Dont forget the sump bolt underneath either
The oil capacity is 1.7 litres. measure out 1.7 (1.6 if not changing the oil filter) and pour it in. Advisible to leave the over flow screw alone, it can strip thread easily.

Pleasure to help. I was give a lot of advise from the kind "Husky Cafe" folks when I got back to Huskies

10/40 is fine, semi syn is fine as is full syn. I go semi as its cheaper but still good quality and change my oil frequently as attested above.
  11. I believe the '04 calls for 1.5 liters when doing a full change (filters and screens). In my '05 I just add 1.5 liters and never use the oil check bolt, those threads will strip easily. On my '09 a full change is 1.7 liters and looks overfull on the sight glass until I run it.

Just be very careful not to overfill the oil! After you pour in about 2/3 or so of the expected amount, add a little at a time and check frequently.

I'm gonna use the level hole until I'm confident I have the right amount. it amazes me how difficult info is to find on these bikes. I can't even get a manual.
