2005 Smr 450 No Start

Hey guys, sorry in advance for the long post. I've owned an SMR 450 for probably 3 years and have never rode it. Just began working on it last year. Turns out valves were tight. Brought the engine to a local shop and they disassembled, replaced, and reassembled the engine. Put a new starter and tuned carb on it from halls and it started hard but I got it going eventually, for about 10 minutes. The starter broke in an unusual way. It stopped the engine from turning? Generally if starter breaks, in my experience, you don't know until you try to start the thing again. Just got the new starter on and it's stopping at every compression cycle. If I hold the compression release it turns and turns. I just checked the valves and they're pretty consistently .05mm over spec. Ordering new shim's Monday. My questions are what would cause a starter to break in that way and could my timing be off? Will attach a picture of the engine at tdc. It looks like the timing marks on the cam line up with the single dimple mark on the timing gear and not the double. Is that correct? Again I apologize for the long post but I'm getting frustrated nearly to a point of selling a nonrunning bike and moving on. -Zak

If the cam chain is not completely destroyed, you have the right timing. I have never even seen a 450 live but engines are engines. If it turns smooth without comp you have at least not a mecanical failure. Sounds like the starter motor doesnt have enough power? If it turns easy unloaded, I cant see another issue. BUT Im not 100% sure.
