250-500cc 2009 wr250 or 300

Hi ...I'm new to this site and live in NJ. I currently ride a yamaha wr250f and have recently decided to buy a Husky. I am torn between the 250 and 300. I ride mostly single track stuff (east coast) but not all that tight. I am most intrested in the low rpm performance of the two bikes as I already know both have plenty of top end. They appear to be quality built and I have read the posts on here about them. Can you guys clue me in on how they perform compared to each other.. I am a B level rider but don't compete much anymore just like to ride with my club. Would like any info. I can get.....thanks......

I haven't rode a 300, yet, but I would think the 250 would be great for your NJ riding. It's got great low end and should drag you around anywhere you want to go.

If you're a really large man, you just rarely get past 1/4 tap, or both, then you might want to look at the 300. By nature of the much bigger bore it's going to have more go-go, down lo-lo.

But... you should be able to pick up 250 much cheaper.

Thanks guy's...I'm 5'8 175 so I think the 250 is more than likely the one....I am also concerned I may have to lower the bike as it seem very tall compared to most new bikes I have owned...thanks for any input....keith

I'm almost the opposite, lol. I like the low end for the low-speed fairly extreme terrain I ride, but I also lug the engine way down lower than most people. on my 200 (and on my 250's) i have to think a little bit about having revving it up to where normal people lug.

Just depends on preference. I also find that after riding a littler bike for a while, a big one is more fun, and vice versa. Variety is good.

We are basically the same size and I find it is on the tall side, but not real bad.

I have never ridden the 300. I have ridden a KTM 300. I own the 250 and race enduros and hare scrambles in eastern type conditions. I agree with most comments. I can lug my 250 a gear high and it hooks up, doesn't spin easily and will still pull me up most anything. I weigh 185lb. Once in the mid range, you better be paying attention to what's going on.

The 300 KTM is just a little bit too strong off the bottom for me. And from I've read around here, the WR300 is stronger than the KTM. Yes, it's easy to ride, but the power wears you down. If I lived at altitude or in wide open spaces, I would go for the 300. In tight woods, I like the 250. Heck, I really like my soft Honda 250X when it's really tight and wet. More power isn't always better.

I have just been on one ride on a stock WR300. It has more power then a KTM 300 but that is becaus it revs out like a 250 mx bike instead of fallingn on it's face. The bottom is a little softer. I hate the ktm because it comes on too hard. The Husky is just smooth perfect traction. The thing I noticed though is that there is so much perfect traction and power that it seems that if I tried to roll the throttle on in a corner the front end would push. Maybe I just had to get used to it. But I have been on a WR250 with a PWK and really it was perfect. I really like that motor. If they could drop some weight and size from it I would probably give up my 125 for one. I am even considering one for a second bike and if I do that I will probably go for the 250 over the 300. But this is coming from a person who likes a 125 and thinks KTM 300s suck in the woods. Others may have different preferances.
