Hey folks. After my '09 TE610 was stolen a couple months back, I've decided to pull the trigger on another Husky. This time I'm looking to steer more toward off-road, less worried about long road-rides between trails. I've been looking at a decently priced 2013 TE310R. Mileage is about 3800. Seems to already have the typical upgrades/add-Ons (skidplate, levers, Barkbusters, ZipTy remap, etc).

I have not been to look at the bike in-person yet. Planning on doing that this week. In the meantime, I've done quite a bit of research on these bikes, and the whole issue with the decomp/starter keeps popping up. Is this something that can be checked to see if it's already been addressed? Is there a particular VIN when the issue was solved (if ever)? Or do I just need to keep an eye on it if I get it?

Any other things to look for? At 3800 miles, is it due to be overhauled?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Check recent threads... A person posted the VIN numbers affected though if after you may be good to go. One can't tell whether the engine needs a rebuild until there is noise or a failure or you keep a close eye on coolant, oil and fan operation. I just had mine rebuilt at 3,800 miles by ZipTy and replaced the piston was about it for parts. So check vin, check if bike starts easily on starter and kick start. If clicks don't keep using the starter but bump it or kick. Try again. If clicks and then feels locked up by the kicker you may simply need to adjust the decompressor. If the Vin shows no gear replacement under warranty, you need to get that done. I had planned on a complete teardown at some point anyway, simply due to the small sump and amount of abusive riding I have done. I plan on keeping the 310 so consider a rebuid, not right away if runs fine but if coolant is being consumed, I would do so right away.

Thanks so much for the reply John. Unfortunately, I am familiar with those telltale "uh-oh sounds" from other bikes:). The TE610 had a magic hour - about 7000 miles (less for some people though) when the cam chain could cause havoc. Just wasn't sure if this model had a similar semi-timed disaster point.

Will definitely check the starter in the manner you describe. I'll also look for the post with the VIN list and check it against the number when I get there.

Can you clarify which hears need replacing under warranty/recall? I know I had stumbled across something about that - but in my haste I never book marked it.

    Appreciate the help.

EDIT: found the thread. Starter gears. I'll check for recall based on the VIN

Looks like this particular bike has a VIN up in the mid 300's. The current owner says he's never experienced an issue - but i will of course check for myself when I get there. Looking on Tuesday. Getting pretty excited.

I'm assuming the iBeat I have from the TE610 (Mikuni EFI) is no use on this bike? Is there a comparable tool for the Keihn units?

Nothing for Keihin. Assume you are on Map 3 which is good. Slightly rich a low revs at elevation but unscrew idle 4-8 clicks when at elevation. Don't crack throttle hot starting because of this but should run fine.

Thanks again! I assume it's the Map 3, it was done by ZipTy Racing. I'll see if the owner has any paperwork. Really looking forward to checking it out. Sounds like a blast once it's dialed in.
