Here is the story: 2014 TE310R with a bit over 2000 miles. Had a radiator hose (the one going into the waterpump) spring a leak out on the trail. By the time I noticed, I ended up dumping 24oz of creek water into the radiator. Fixed the hose, straightened my radiators and bolted it all up and filled with Engine Ice.

Couple of rides later, countershaft seal was leaking oil, and eventually started billowing white smoke. Nothing out of the exhaust, just from the seal. Had to add distilled water to the radiators, figured it might have been that I didn't properly burp the coolant system from when I tore it down.
Replaced the seal, ran it around the block and didn't see any smoke. Good to go! Wrong. Less smoke, but still blowing past the seal.

Now, here I am wondering if I just do a headgasket or while I have the engine out of the bike, should I do the piston / rings as well?

The problem with doing a piston on this bike is that I am having a hard time finding piston kits for them - plenty available for the older versions.

This is the only piston kit that I have been able to find.

Any advice would be welcome. Thank you!

My 2009 just ran the cam bearings, so I took the head off to check everything. With the barrel removed, it's easy to see the state of the bore and piston. Worth checking the valves as well.

No prior experience with these engines / gaskets. But to me it looks like they "flowed" into the water passages around the cylinder. I know I will at least be ordering a new head gasket.
**EDIT** Just checked the gasket more closely - the metal part of the gasket is shaped to those size holes, so its not obvious that the head gasket is bad, but the disappearing coolant has me wondering.

Carbon came off really easily - really gummy.

Still not sure what my options are for the piston. I suppose I could go OEM or the Pro Circuit hi-comp piston. I think the pricing is about the same either way. Was hoping planning to put a Wiseco piston in it, but can't seem to find any for the 13/14 TE310.

The valves seemed to be within spec, bike has been starting fine.
My only issue with the valves is that the shims are getting dished out by the stem. Again, they are still in spec.

Carb cleaner or injector cleaner will get the rest of that stuff off the top of the piston.
