it states on the 2014 entry flyer... OMRA and AMA membership are required.. (both ? or will just the AMA do if you are out of state) what class would a 50 year old guy ride if he never raced before ? (will be 50 May 6).. Pushing maximum density these days and thinking having a fitness goal to lose weight for this might be a good idea...
Both are required, but you can now purchase a 'one day' pass from both organizations. $5 for OMRA and $20 for AMA. At least this is how I did it at the Funky Chicken earlier this year, which has the same requirements.
Class could depend on if you want to ride 50 or 100 miles. My son rides Open AM Since he is 14 I have to escort him. Let me know if you want to ride on our minute and we can sign up together. It is a fun event.
Thanks Phaeton !... remember meeting you guys at the NW Fall gathering... I will be in touch ... Never done one of these .... will have questions
We got answers. If you get in OK shape do the 100 miler as out there 50 miles goes quick IMHO. If you really want to get in great shape and do a hard race do the idaho city ISDE. Its an ass kicker.
Idaho city is beyond my capabilites I don't know anything about enduro... gas stops ?? having to impound your bike ? stuff like that ...
I haven't done the ISDE since 06', but I do remember having to impound my bike after tech inspection. And I also remember we basically did 2 loops and had a chance to refill after the first loop. I wanna go do it now
Chainhat ISDE. Inspect and impound bike night before race. Get bike 5 minutes before your start minute. You have an amount of time to get from one check to another and don't want to be late but can be early. Then you wait for your minute to arrive again and take off. There are usually about 5 special tests where you go as fast as you can. You dont know how far they are or where they start they are just scattered within the 100 miles. Back to staging area at about 50 miles for fuel and then off again on your minute. You try to not gain minutes (late to checks) and then put the hammer down on the specials. So you want to zero your checks (not be late or roll over early) and do the best on the specials. They add up all your checkpoints and specials (1 second is a point) and the lowest wins. If you enter the right class you should be about 1-5 minutes early to your checks, take a quick brake and eat/drink and your off. So it send up being a fast trail ride with a race mixed in. Love that format.
Race is schedule for April 26, 2015 so you wont quite qualify for 50. You can ride any younger class that you like. Or as others said, Open works. Another way to get on the 1/2 course is to ride Beginner or Sportsman if offered. Jr, All over 50, Women, Beg and Sports are all 1/2 distance classes. Weve also been waiving the OMRA day pass to encourage ridership so you may only have to get an AMA card/pass. Also make sure you have your State of Oregon bike and rider requirements covered. http://www.rideatvoregon.org/ http://www.oregon.gov/oprd/ATV/Pages/Permits.aspx
Open, 250, 30, 40, AA (if yer fast) My brother Mark usually rides 30 Expert so he can be on minute with his younger friends and get the full 100 mile experience.
Kevin there is also a poker run the day before. This would allow you to get your China hat fix in under 100 miles if you only choose to ride 50 on race day. Although 100 is not to bad with the breaks and all. Ryan and I were at least 10 min early to every checkpoint. About perfect. Any earlier and you can get cold that time of year. This was Ryan's first race and he had been riding for 1 year. On the second 50 mile loop they ran us thru trail 38 which is fairly technical. He stalled the bike many times and had trouble getting thru a couple of the sections. This ended up costing him and he got a Silver. Every time we ride China hat we go thru that area back to back. He can rail it with no issues anymore. He vowed to get a Gold this year. We shall see. On another note the medals are subject to sand baggers. Say for instance you get gold in open am but with your times you would also be able to get gold in open X IMHO you should be moved up in class or disqualified. In the end it is a great event with no mass start craziness.
do they mix all the classes together ? if I was in the begginer class would my minute be only beginners or would other classes be in my minute ?
Faster guys out front working your way back through the minutes. Of course there are always some faster guys behind you coming through. If you do the lower classes you will not have to deal with this much if at all.
Kevin_TE250 You could do some of the local races in the Boise area to get tuned up or just come out to the desert and ride with me, I live in Nampa.
