88 430.JPG Hi Folks. My 88 430 six speed is popping out of gear under decelleration. When I'm on the gas it's ok. It is hapening in 3rd or 4th gear. I forget which gear cause I parked it as soon as it started happening last summer. Does this sound familiar to anyone. What could be the problem? I checked the linkage inside the outer case & all is well. I replaced the pins in the shift drum because they had flat spots but that didn't fix my problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks Doggg. I was afraid I was gonna hear something like that. I have never split the cases on this bike. I guess I will be doing that when the weather breaks. Ebay...here I come...lol shopping for a gasket set & parts when I see what I need. I hope I can determine what gears & dogs are worn.

Can anyone tell me what is the range of years & engine displacment sizes that have the six speed transmission components (gears, shafts, engagement dogs, shifting forks, etc..) that fit my 1987/1988 430? Does the eirly air cooled 430 stuff fit? How about 500cc or 250cc stuff? Are there parts shared with these other sizes & years? Any Help will be appreiciated.

I have an 1988 430 apart and the third gear looked a little chewed on the teeth. The 87-88 have a unique input shaft which has first gear built into it hence you would re use that. I found some gears (zip lock bag with both shafts, all gears and shift drum) from a xc 500 water cooled one which seemed exactly the same. Basically everything (i bothered to examine) looked the same except for the input shaft. I am still a week or so away from putting it back together, plan on switching everything but first. I don't promise to be right you could check parts numbers but the way I recall there is one 250 probably the wr, the 400, 430 and 500 so long as they are not cr (some cr has the six speed) and even te four stroke have the same ratios though I only have 430 and 500 two stroke stuff apart of them.

I wonder if stuff from what is called the older single cam on this site is compatible, the ratios remain the same for another 10 years or so.

    a month or so later,
I have the project of selecting transmission gears this week for an 88 430 6 sped. For that year fourth fifth and sixth are the same as the six speed 250. The worst gear third on the clutch shaft is actually the same part as in a 1999 te and available not nla like the similar gear for the 250 of the same year.

Thanks fran, I haven't cracked the cases yet (& probably won't untill early spring) so I thought I'd ask around here for some input. It seems like there are alot of knowlegable people on this forum. I don't want the motor to be apart for long (already have to many projects going on) so when I see what I need, I want to know what fits & what to look for so I can act fairly quickly.

Wow, that thing is trashed! Thats why I stopped riding mine. You gonna fix it yourself? Will you be using any "special husky" tools to do it or just standard pullers, hammers,... etc?

Ha Ha, yes, I ment small rubber mallets & small plastic dead blows. I think I want to stick with a six speed & I really haven't done any research on what bike has what gear ratios. Just found this site & thought I'd ask around for input first.
