  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

449 supermoto build - rear wheel spacing and chain slap

So I got my front wheel issues resolved and now I'm on to the rear wheel. I have a 5" Rexfelgen rim running a 160/60/17 Bridgestone tire. As is common with SM build, I don't have much (zero) clearance between the rear tire and chain.

So I guess my options to resolve the clearance issue are
1) Offset the rear wheel towards the brake and offset the sprocket from the hub
2) Offset the sprocket from the hub only (resulting in misalignment between front and rear sprockets)
3) Run a different tire profile
4) A combination of the above.

Anyone else put a 5" rim in a 449 swingarm and resolve the clearance?
Any advice?

Why did you decide to go with such an agressive setup? 4.5" with a150 stone is perfect for the 450/500 cc bikes. Anything more is just asking for headaches with no performance gain. The 150 steers quicker and sticks just as hard

With the chain moving along with the tire, how much rubbing is actually happening? I'm thinking with the tighter chain tension on the CTS you might get away with it on a street bike as long as the tire is not getting chewed up too badly. That said, a narrower tire as suggested above is probably the easiest fix.

Bought the wheels used and researched before I bought them to find plenty of people with 449/511 with 5" rear installed

R Stephen, did you offset your rear rim? Which tires are you running?

I think the road tires are more prone to chain rub than slicks or motard tires.

The first picture above shows the chain is just contacting the tire at the widest point. I'd like about 3mm clearance minimum.

If it's that close tanding still it will tear that tire up quick. My setup has at least 1/4" to 3/8" clearance and the chain still hits on the tight right handers leaner over off the throttle. I am going to try and snug the chain up. It's mostly just cosmetic damage on the edge of the tire though, nothing major.

On the bikes with CTS (449/511) the chain tension is more constant so can cope with slightly tighter clearance I reckon.

I have a 5in rim on my 511, way better selection of tyres (road and slicks), if it's just hitting the tyre and not the rim who cares...

Which tire are you running caiman? Do you have clearance issues?

PS I lived in Darwin and Perth for 8 years. Aus is awesome.

Running Goldpseed Ultra streets currently, not clearance issues, ran Contiattack SM's before with slight rub. If you get knocked back for chain rub then your scrutineers are doing it wrong.

So I changed to a 150/60R17 profile michelin 2CT on the back and now have ~6mm clearance to the chain

For future ref, 160/60 street tires are too wide for the 449/511

160 supermoto slicks tires work because they have a different profile
