Pretty sad when the 3rd place PRO team gets beat by the first Ironman ,AKA The guy who rode the whole course by himself on a bike. Sorry to say Baja just does not have the draw it use to for the motorcycles Also from what I have heard it should be noted Big Time that Steve Hegeveld made up a lot of time in the dark section to make the pass and but the 4x in the lead The speeds in Baja are just crazy fast to average 52 mph for over 1,000 miles shows how fast the winning team goes for over 24 hours
I like how Max blew a tire apart, got a used, bald tire at a mexican pit and replaced it with screwdrivers.
Me personally------would/will NEVER race one of these type races on a bike. In a buggy or truck with a full cage I would do that (but most likely will never do it). A long list of the best top tier Moto Off road racers have died doing these type of races from Lalay, Sainct, Meoni, Cavandoli, Hamel, to Caselli and many more. High speed open course races I hope never go away, because they sure are cool factor off the charts races (kinda like IOM and Macau GP), but way outside my personal envelope/safety net. Ive done a lot of races in Mexico all sort of closed course and mostly single track with motos only, so it not Mex that's the issue with me its those crazy speeds on basically dirt roads. Glad all those guys are safe and celebrating.Happy to see a Green bike on the top of the box. That was a good race for pro bikes very close racing for @ 1200 miles--jeeez!!
Any one who has ever raced or preran Baja has many a story to tell and understands what it takes to finish. There was a time when I was addicted to the place I still love sitting around with friends swapping Baja stories
701X Husky Update. I am sorry to report that Bonanza Plumbing supported and last years Iron Man Champion Alexander Smith had a great Baja 1000 going running as high as 5th or 6th motorcycle overall until he crashed out about RM 1255. It appears he had quite a battle going with eventual class winner 730X, Francisco Septien, from about RM 1200 when Alexander crashed and severely injured his left hand. That's a tough break after over 30 hours of riding! Alexander has already gone through reconstructive surgery and is recovering at this time. Sounds like things went well with the surgery. The weird part is Alexander said 730X just showed up out of nowhere at RM1200. Looks like both trackers weren't working. I will post more details when they become available. Get well soon Alexander. News from the pits of Ironman Tony Gera #702x: He was having some light issues at night and was still able to pull away from the #701 bike and start to catch the eventual winner Septien. Until at approx mile 670 in Viscaino he was told that his parents and little brother were in a herendous roll-over crash in the families chase van just outside of Guerro Negro. Not knowing how they were doing Tony took to hwy and rode miles to Guerro Negro, he see's the family van smashed up with nobody around. He rode to the hospital in G.N. and found out everyone had survived after all being ejected out of the van. Mom was suffering from a broken collar bone, 6 yo brother and dad are scratched up and sore but okay. Upon hearing this that was the end of our race too, load it up and head to G.N. Someone was definitely looking after this family... J.O.
