    It's a two edged sword. It's exactly the bike I'm looking for but I want a bike to ride and I think I would feel wierd about thrashing such a nice survivor as that one.

    Your biggest problem is likely to be dried out seals and rubbers.

    I bought an unused '83 XC500 a few years ago. I took great pleasure in getting it completely plastered in mud. I've probably spent more time cleaning it than riding it, but I don't see it as any different to any other new dirt bike. They're for riding, fettling, maintaining and admiring. You could perhaps add 'preserving' to that list for a vintage bike.
