I have an 86 500 XC and have a busted spring mount on my clutch inter hub. I was apparently converted to a 6bolt hub by a previous owner. My question is...can I use a 93 360 6 bolt inter hub on my 86 500? If not what vintage hub am I looking for???
    Thanks for any info!

a 5 bolt to 6 bolt is not that simple the 5 bolt is held to the shaft with a clip and the 6 bolt uses a nut
the later model clutches like a 360 share absolutely nothing in common, they were designed in a different country to serve a different purpose
simplest fix is another 6 bolt hub

There in lies the problem...it is an 86 500xc, best as I can tell. Frame numbers check out but motor numbers are obscured by two welds running right threw them. From all my research I havnt found where an 86 came with a 6 bolt clutch. I'm trying to find out what year clutch hub I'm needing...
Here is a pic of clutch mostly taken apart.

looking at the picture there are two possibilities
the engine is an 87 or 88
the transmission was replaced wit an 87 or 88
on the other side is there a 4 bolt bearing cover behind the sprocket, those ended in 86 so if there is a bearing cover it is an early engine with a later clutch
by the way the advantage to the early ones is you can replace the bearing without splitting the cases

It appears to be a 87-88 motor. No 4bolt flange behind output/front sprocket.

I'd numbers that arnt welded over.

Could you put a picture of what is broken? I see the six cast aluminum tower things, often guys break them leveraging off them to do the fold over washer. I can tell by the rod that is an 87-88 engine. How many teeth on the primay drive engine and clutch that will help identify what you have.

Those welds most likely are because it kicked back and broke the pocket the shaft for the intermediate kick start gear open. I am rather skeptical a thourough repair is done when a weld is seen there. On your bike there are two little bolts to help hold that shaft that never will need removed but some guys do and forget to put them back which makes a crack more likely.

Ill post a pic tomarow. It broke a tower thingy near the base. I notice fed a crack in it but turned a blind eye to it...hoping it wouldn't become a problem. That's a guaranteed way to have a problem! It broke near the bottom...Below the end of the threads. It may have happened when the case cracked as it don't have the normal grove/ring from when it happens during a ride.
From what I have gathered from conversations with last 2 owners it happened prior to 92. My pops has had it since around 98-99 and his buddy had it before that, bought it in late 92-early 93. I have been told it was raced in at least 2 baja races but no conformation.

sometimes you have to learn the hard way i guess...try go find a 6 bolt basket, you dont want to switch to a 5...dont turn a blind eye to anything on these, as things get expensive quick. when everything is in good shape tho, very stout..

Yeah I'm learning. Ill b keeping an eye out for a 6 bolt inter hub. May have to find a NOS one if they exist. They definatly will let you know when you mess up or miss something! And like you say...not cheap!

I fixed one of those for a guy on a brand x bike. make a plate with a few holes where the towers are so as to locate the tower in the correct place. Dig out the back probably before using the plate and the loose tower piece and plug weld. There really isn't anything but tension from the spring (in compression) on that the way I see it and the guy I repaired it for broke it doing the fold over washer like I mentioned above. There should be plenty of used ones if it is common to the 250 and 430 like I suspect.

That had crossed my mind...I was afraid to change the balance of it by adding to much or not enough weight. Is it aluminum? I'd assume it isn't magnesium.

The cases, the clutch cover, and the brake backing plates are the only magnesium I can think of off hand. Whether they made any aluminum clutch covers for those 87-88 I don't know the one I tested is magnesium. They are of course a castable alloy of magnesium.

Ok I can do the aluminum my self. Had to have the magnesium cover done for me, first because of the cost of filler rod. Min order of 2lbs at around $200 was to much for me! Ill give it a go. Guess I can make things work as it is shot anyhow.
    Thanks for the info!!!

The clutch covers were aluminum in 1986 models . The 1985 and older aircooled and L/C case I have are magnesium
