One of the battery mass contacts broke off on the motorway a few days back. So I took out the battery this morning and found that (a) the foam rubber strip at the bottom of the battery box still had its adhesive backing paper on and (b) the two rubber plugs that fit into the holes at the back of the box were neatly lying at the bottom of the box and (c) there was no hook for the rubber battery strap to hook on to at the top. No great problem sticking the foam rubber strip, fitting the rubber plugs and riveting a new hook for the battery strap onto the frame. But it does cast a light on the lacking pride of workmanship in the Italian factory!
Does it come with the battery separate ... or installed? If separate, it´d have been the dealer at fault. It´s these minor things like bolts not torqued correctly etc. that you have to put up with if you don´t get a Japanese bike. But still, I´d still prefer the Italian.
Finger tight nuts on the rear sprocket are what I have a problem with. Other bikes I've owned (mainly street) have had loctite used all over them from the factory. I don't think a new owner should have to disassemble and reassemble his new ride so parts don't fall off. This the only bike I've owned where I've ran into this. My last 2 honda dirtbikes never had this problem. Having said this I really freakin' dig this bike.
Hi When I was installing JD settings I have noticed on some pictures on this web, that battery is secured in place by plastic strap over the top - I assume that is what you talk about. My TE does not have this strap at all - the picture I have seen are from SM. Do you guys with TE have the strap over battery or not? I know logically there should be no difference, but I do not have it. Ta
My TE has the strap and all TE's should as well. If yours is missing see the dealer you bought from, they owe you a free one. Not super important but if you do any hard off road rding you don't want the battery bouncing around. _
No, I had the standard rubber strap. But it was just lying on the battery, hooked on at the bottom but with nowhere on the crossbar at the top to hook onto. And the two plugs for the holes in the back of the battery box were lying UNDER the battery, together with the foam rubber strip that was supposed to be stuck onto the bottom of the battery box, but with the paper backing still on the adhesive.(I made a new hook for the rubber strap and riveted it onto the crossbar). This shows a very evident lack of quality control, very much at variance with the excellent quality of Italian motorcycle design.
Yes, Primrose. Will talk to them this week and see why its not there. Missing strap probably explains why my lights stopped working on the trip to Lesotho - the connector (additional from Lynx fairing) on the battery was broken - originally I just thought I have connected it stupidly.
Ja boet! Not kosher. I battery that can bounce about is not going to last. Did you import the Lynx to SA - what did cost all told?
Connector on my 630 broke `cos of the missing strap too! (I´d like to know exactly where the missing top hook for the strap is supposed to be placed)
Yes, I did import. It cost (last year March) 658 Canadian dollars. I have the one with HID short light and halogen bright light. If I would do it again, I would go both halogens - its considerably cheaper and HID are just too much hassle with the ballast adding weight to the fairing and also Lynx uses quite unusual HID bulbs (H9 or H11), which are hard to come by in SA. To be fair, Ian from Britannia Composites who sells the Lynx tried to persuade me to go for both halogens - which proves that he does the right thing as with HID I spent more money with him, but I was just idiot thinking that I know better as I had HID on my GS1150.
I do not have it, but there is picture in the first post on this thread - maybe it can help you a bit: Code: http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/new-fi-tuner-on-my-sm-630.18398/
Looks like the hinge plate is rivetted or bolted on the underside of the frame - maybe feel and see if it the catch plate is predirilled (I am too lazy to go and look at mine). It is always possible that the bolts were not tightened and Locktited ex factory (or not fitted at all) and it vibtrated off??
The hook for the battery strap is riveted to the sub frame. I happen to have my sub frame removed so could easily take a photo.
