Here´s a pic of my 630 side panel. My boots have scratched through the decals. Thought the 630 had plastics with the colours moulded in. Wonder how easily the decals can be replaced (and even if I can order new ones)
SMS is all decals. I considered pulling all the decals and flat-blacking the whole bike... not sure though...
It's already painted white, I don't see why you couldn't clean it, rough it up a bit and paint it black. Use some good quality paint and keep it fairly thin and you should be OK.
Here are the part #'s: 8000H1898 8000H1900 Hall's is selling them for nearly 24bucks a pop. If you do replace them I'd suggest covering them with a clear sheet decal to protect them. Something like a roll of masking for glass etching would work. Replace as needed so you don't have to keep buying expensive new Husky decals.
My CCM has the same type plastic ... and paint just peels off. I´ve heard it mentioned that there´s some type of blacking process that stays on and looks good, but have not seen it yet.
If you didn't want to paint, you could always get some of the vinyl sheeting like they use to black out car hoods. Any ricer shop should have some, just needs a little bit of stretch to get the edges. Or find some self-etching primer before painting black.
Thanx for all the advice. But the black option sounds a bit tricky. Think the best idea is to get the original decals and just be more careful. They certainly are easily damaged.
I used to use these on my sportbike tanks: http://www.thetankslapper.com/index.html Maybe if you contact them, they'll sell sheets you can cut yourself. Their film is static cling. They also sell 3M film that has some adhesive. The 3M is the route I'd go.
