Is there some sort of a trick installing the kick starter in the clutch cover? I was told the clutch cover will crack if not done correctly. Also is any one using the N O S kick starter from Husqvarna-Parts in Arizona . I was wondering if its a good part? The kick starter that's currently on my recently purchased 1981 430XC is hitting the swing arm bolt. Thanks for any guidance

Something seems a bit odd with the rubber bumper for the kick start lever. That looks like the 87-88 sort of. Putting the intermediate piece on the splined shaft that goes through the case in the wrong position will (though I have not found out for sure myself) break the cover in the event of a kick back maybe cause other problems. I have had that kick starter hitting the nut of the swingarm bolt It is kind of a result of wear in the pieces. Eliminating or getting a thinner washer under that nut will at least in my case make it only hit the nyloc portion. Eventually that little bolt broke off and I welded a washer sort of thing on and I don't think that hits now, it is the hex part of that bolt that hits isn't it? Maybe that is why it broke.

You have a keen eye fran...k. The cover and I assume the kick starter is off a newer model with the water pump blocked off. The P O wants me to send the kick starter assembly to Husky Restorations in Colorado so it can be mounted in an original type cover. I would rather do the install myself. He warned that the cover will crack if you don't " preload the kick assembly" So at this point I was trying to figure out what he meant.

The kick starter and the intermediate piece to me, long distance, do not look like 87-88 to me. 87-88 does not have the bolt on the end there is a pin sort of thing that goes in sideways. That 87-88 cover has a bigger cavity for the clutch and the kickstarter and intermediate piece and the bumper were all modified. Is the kick starter pedal steel? I have put this picture up before to show the differences that came about. The older, and some were water cooled, has more offset in the intermediate piece.

For amusement I put a picture of an 1988 engine in a 1999 four stroke frame and then what I had to (well the final version) do to make the auto work in that frame. the kick starter pivot at least the 430 auto is lower.

I suspect if that kickstarter you pictured is steel it is from around 1984. 84 was a different frame, a white one. I never thought that perhaps the kick pivot to swingarm pivot would be any different or the intermidate part changed in that time. Just thinking out loud.

the only time it can crack is installing it...(forcing the sidecase home when something is misaligned like the kickstart stub or a shifter stub).
i have heard of them cracking during kickback events or normal use, just never seen it. this is why husky added the extra bolt you see on the newer sidecase.
the kicker you are using looks steel, much like the one my 84 a/c wr250 is running. the sidecase itself is 87-88 style, judging by the bumpstop

if its just scraping the threaded part you can adjust the whole thing to the right to get the clearance you need

The 81 430's came from the Factory (early production run) with incorrect ignition timing.. this caused the kick back and broke the cases. tho that was through the centre case where the kick shaft runs.. if you tru to get too much "pre-load' on the kicker.. you can tell by trying to push the bike backwards.. the kicker will ratchet..
