81 430 Topend

I took the topend off my 81 430xc yesterday just to check things over before the new season starts. What is the recommended piston/cylinder clearence and the maximum ring end gap?

It looked really good to me. The piston clearence is .035 and the end gap is .020.

There are a few different things to check. Of course they are in metric measurements. Usually feeler guages have both etched into the blades. End gap 0.8mm and 0.3mm sticking the guage beside the piston skirt at the bottom of the cylinder but there are a few other things to measure as well. I guess the manual is for all two stroke models.

If your measurements are in inches, then your ring end gap is OK but your piston clearance is HUGE! Stock was about .004", and according to the manual .012" is max, and even that is pretty loose!

Piston/cylinder clearence is .0035 to a .004. I think that I'll just knock the glaze off with a light hone, and put in the new ring. The piston looks good.

Ahhh... the power of a zero! That makes much more sense.
