88 430 AE Auto - Spring Types

Can somebody please advise which spring types I have. The spring on the left is the one that came out of the bike, the one on the right is the type I have in my spares kit. I have searched the forums and there is talk about the "new improved type". I guess that is the stock spring that is on the left. At least it didn't break, it lost its tension however so I figure that it is not that much improved. Is there any advice as to which type is better than the other?

The right one ( pig tail ) is the improved one.
The wire is less bended at the end than the left one ( so theorically less breakings).
Left one are the design for 360 to 500 i believe.
But 360 to 500 springs have differents diameters and differents coils numbers.
You need the hub 430 with the right holes to use the pig tail springs.

Thanks Michel for that information, I will try the ones on the right and see how they go. When I bought the bike they installed the springs on the left. Being a stock standard 430AE it should have the correct hub for the pigtail spring. I would imagine that a smart springmaker could remanufacture these springs using the latest materials and make a fortune from all of the Husky Auto fans out there. I wonder who the supplier is to keep the Swedish Army going with boxes of spring?

I have a 4 speed 420.I rode it for a couple of years and didn't brake a spring.I did the hacksaw through the shoe grooved bit and bought a set of new springs,supposedly improved design.I then started braking springs a lot.I kept buying these spring and they kept braking.Eventually I checked out them with the original springs and found the new ones were a bit shorter.The improved springs were from the later 430 water cooled model.I went back to the correct springs and they stopped braking.There are different part numbers for either spring.A real improved better material spring would be a seller,for me anyway.

I posted this picture a while ago. on the left is probably a 360 or 390 hub with the bronze shoes which attach blade style. the 420 has bronze shoes attaching fork style like the other two pictures. Center is a 500 hub. The one on the right with the packing peanuts is a 430, note there are two holes for spring ends on the center portion. I think this could be used with either style of spring, I had no idea the 1988 origionally had the old style spring. In my opinion and I tried to show it with the loose springs on the left is that the good ones have a grey mottled appearance and the breakage prone springs have a gun blue sort of appearance. Just my observations from when you could get the kit of drum and shoes and fastners and three springs from the dealer for about $150. Like an above post I never broke a 420 spring but there was some galling in there looking like one had once broken.

Here's some examples. The scale for the last pic is in cm !
The best is to do it yourself ( 1 mm inox = rust free steel ).

What is the purpose of the plates? Is it simply to prevent a broken spring coming free and getting stuck in-between some gear teeth causing damage? Obviously the mod means you can't change springs without undoing the securing nut. Thanks.

Have you changed these springs with the clutch shoes in the motor ?
