I just bought my 2014 Terra from Hall's in Springfield last Monday the 7th and now have 770 miles on it, and scheduled for my first service on Friday. I have a few questions/comments, if people would comment or help me out, I would appreciate it :-) 1. Hall's said they used the MOSS tool on it, but I am having problems. Idle doesn't seem steady, and it has died at idle at least once. With the hickup's at low RPM's I find myself twisting the throttle to get the RPM's up higher then needed and slipping the clutch to make sure it doesn't stall with people around. I am going to get Hall's to check to see if the update "took", but it doesn't seem good right now. 2. I thought on my test ride that everything was smooth, but I have noticed quiet a bit of engine vibes, especially around 60 mph. 3. Anyone have their oil dipstick crossthreaded when they took delivery? I had to use plyers to unscrew it, and use a rag to get all of the plastic shavings from the threads of the bike - I'm going to mention it when I take it in. 4. I have been running premium gas, and worst has been 47 mpg on interstate going 70-75 mph, and best has been 62 mpg going 55 and accelerating very slowly - snooze :-) Should MPG increase after the initial oil change and more miles on the bike? I though I would get a little better MPG - my average seems to be about 52-54. 5. The stock rear rack is junk - I'm not even talking about it being plastic - there just doesn't even seem to be that good of tie down points. 6. I really do enjoy the bike and look forward to getting a few things straightened out on it. I'm glad there is a great place like this to learn and ask questions. I try to dig through the threads to figure stuff out as often as I can. Thanks a lot!
Check out the Nomadic racks. If you're going to do any off road, put some braces on the rear fender soon.
I might have a pic of your Terra! My Strada was sitting next to a Terra at Halls when I took my first pic when I bought it. Mine runs pretty good but have had a stall or two. You'll find that once at speed the ECU tuning does it's best to keep the AFR (air/fuel ratio) right on the edge of lean and not running. It makes it a little more "vibe-y". I used to tune all my own fuel injection systems so I can feel the ECU doing these things. Members here have reported the unstable idle goes away if you add a tuner or spoofer to richen the idle AFR. Hopefully someone can answer your MPG question. I've never really kept track of mine. Too busy having fun! The ECU is set very lean and gearing is tall. You have already noticed it takes a "running start" off the line. Meaning you gotta get some revs in it before you let the clutch out. Unless Husqvarna or BMW or KTM or whoever releases a tuning program I think we're stuck using other options like the XiED or EJK tuners. Unfortunately EJK doesn't make a direct application but if you read the past posts you'll find that some users found one from a BMW application that works. I emailed Dobeck Performance (mfg of the EJK) and they said "no guarantees" as they have not tested it. They did, however, say they have a 30-day satisfaction guarantee so I can try it and if it doesn't work return it within 30 day.
Gibster - I will check out Nomadic racks, thanks. V8Astro - I know Hall's has sold quite a few Terra's. The week before I bought mine, the one on the floor said "sold", and when I went to buy mine the one that I took a test ride on was also sold. I think they have gone throught quite a few Terra's since they sold their last Strada. Steve (salesman) said that the owner bought a bunch of Terra's from California, which just made me wonder, did California have a different "map" or whatever for emissions there? Also, I was able to get my Terra for $6,500 OTD if anyone else is looking for a new one in the Midwest. The BMW/Husky dealer in Chicago had a new 2013 Strada that he would have sold for the same price... I will keep reading up on teh "tuners" or "spoofers" if my trip to Hall's doesn't clear things up. I think I was starting to see that the Eruption and the Wukka end up not working as well after a while because the ECU is smarter and figures out that we are trying to trick it..? I'll keep reading.... Thanks!
You ask a number of questions and I can't type well enough to fully answer them all. We probably should get together some time cause I just live about 35 miles west of Hall's. They are very familiar with the stalling issue but they don't have the answer to it. The bike may very possibly run fine when you pick it up from them after being mossed again but not necessarily. If it does run better it will probably only be temporary. There are lots of remedies being kicked around on this forum so put on your reading glasses and dig in.
You'll find the answer to a lot of your questions here: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=850525 Make sure you check out the first link listed.
Congratulations! The oil dipstick is extremely easy to cross thread. I haven't heard of any like this from delivery, but I'm not surprised. Hopefully Hall's gets a new one on order. If/when you get a new one, be very careful. 52-54 is about right. It's very dependent on your wrist.
If you pull the oil dipstick and do the High Five mod it won't cross thread anymore. Just snip the dipstick off about a 1/4" below the full mark on the stick. Voila' fixed.

I am going to get Hall's to check to see if the update "took", but it doesn't seem good right now. Hall's said the bike showed that it had the latest update, but they run the update again. The bike seemed to be a little better on the ride home, but I have not been able to take it out for a longer ride. The guys were very helpful. 2. I thought on my test ride that everything was smooth, but I have noticed quiet a bit of engine vibes, especially around 60 mph. Seems like it's just like this - it's not extreme or anything.. 3. Anyone have their oil dipstick crossthreaded when they took delivery? I had to use plyers to unscrew it, and use a rag to get all of the plastic shavings from the threads of the bike - I'm going to mention it when I take it in. Hall's hooked me up with a new dipstick - drzcharlie - I'll check into taking care of the problem with what you mentioned. Sounds like my mileage is about right, but I would guess that it will increase a bit after getting some more miles on the motor - that is, if I can keep my wrist in control from having too much fun :-) 5. The stock rear rack is junk - I'm not even talking about it being plastic - there just doesn't even seem to be that good of tie down points. That Nomadic rack looks nice, especially for the price. What looks like the cheapest/best option for side racks? Seems like they will run at least $230? 6. I really do enjoy the bike and look forward to getting a few things straightened out on it. I'm glad there is a great place like this to learn and ask questions. I try to dig through the threads to figure stuff out as often as I can. Thanks a lot! I'm not looking forward to the temperatures getting back into the 90's and with high humidity, but I'm sure I will manage to get a few rides in!
When I went to buy my terra last year in august the only bikes left were in california and was not shipping soon because ktm bought bmw and those bikes were not going to bmw or ktm. They worked every thing out and that is one of the bikes you have. It has the same tune as all of the other terra's. I did not find any difference in looking for differences between your bike and what was shipped to the rest of the country. I used to sell new vehicles world wide so understand usually this is not the case. I run 70-75 60 miles a day average about 50-52 mpg too. The bike loves 55mph as you stated
