I'm fresh out of college and this will be my first big purchase. Its black/gray and listed to have 1 mile for $6400. I've had a street legal sumo'd 00 DRZ 400 E for a few months and am looking to have something nicer, newer, quieter and faster. Also I hope it to be a little better on the slab to get to the mountain roads.

I plan to commute on it daily, 30 miles round trip and then ride for fun when I can. Does this sound like a good plan?

I might do a track day here and there but I am very much a beginner. I've ridden the hell out of a 96 xr80r when I was 10 or so, staying ahead of a friend on a kx100 at a local dirt pit that was half technical and half flat out, and then I rode a yz80 a few years after that. But that was on the dirt and about 15 years ago when I was worry free.

Before the drz I had a 98 cbr600 for a month but I hated how awkward and clumsy I felt on it coming straight from a small dirt bike background. Then I road the DRZ and felt immediately at home.

Anyway sorry for the long windedness but this is a huge purchase for me and I want to make sure this is going to be something I can ride for a few years trouble free.

Is this price about right? I've read of people getting new ones for 5.5k. Is this legit? Is 6.4k reasonable? I will be financing the minimum amount of 5k for 12mo. and paying the rest upfront.

What are potential issues I need to be aware of? I've read of some nut coming loose and shearing a pin/key inside the clutch cover. Is this just an issue with older bikes? How common is it to need to change the timing chain really soon? I've read it ranges from 3k to 10k miles.

I've never adjusted valves before. Approx. how long of a procedure is this? I've rebuilt a 4cyl car engine and transmission before so I'm relatively mechanically inclined but don't want to go through tons of work every 3k miles.

I know a lot of this has been covered and I'll continue to search but I might be buying it tomorrow so this is a last minute cry for help.

Sounds like you're moving in the right direction and you've done you're homework. You don't need to be a mechanical wizard to handle the minor chores needed to keep you're 610 happy. Price wise, $6400 sounds about right for a NOS bike. You'll definitely love the step up in power and and hwy ride from the Suzi. It will feel familiar but better and welcome to Cafe Husky.

I paid $6500. out the door, so I say not bad. It was my goal to have a TE but there were none to be had, second choice was to buy a SM and convert it. I am very happy with my now TE610 and after you get it broke in and have it opened up it will run even better. IMO is is the best looking true duel sport on the market. As far as adjusting valves and maintenance there is a ton of knowledge on this site and everyone is willing share information.

I'll try and get back to you on some of the things to check on the bike. They are minor but I've watched my dealer go through a few and noted he does loc-tite some things that maybe are not normal, a few inside the cases. Adjusting valves seemed pretty easy and the engines are very reliable.

If you like your DRZ, you are really going to like the Husky! I paid $6,500 for my 08 SM last November. Cafe Husky is a great resource with great people. Welcome!

Let me guess. The dealer wouldn't finance a bike for a young man with no visible means of income so now you hate Husky's.

LOL, that was a mighty odd change in post manners. My guess is Rajo hit it dead on and the Husky dealer would not finance the bike for him. Still had me chuckling pretty good..
