I know that look..."I'm so stoked, I'm gonna be a motocross star, totally telling all the guys at school! Dad when can I ride it, how about right now?!" "I'm trying to play it cool, but that's not gonna last long..." There's nothing like that new bike smell.
It still scares him to death. Every time he gives it a little throttle, he freaks out. Baby steps. We had a little spill yesterday, where he was getting off the bike and I was getting on, and he grabbed a handful of throttle on his way off, throwing us both on the ground (auto clutch). Should have had him put it in neutral before he got off.
...and here we are! So far, he can go in a straight line, and we practice using the kickstand and shifting in and out of neutral every time he stops. Now that he's over that initial fear, he's super excited about riding.
Congrats. Keep the idle hands busy. I fully support doing this even though the moms worry. As long as there grades in school are good. My 4yo grandson is riding a Suzuki jr50 with training wheels I purchased for him. His first crash he jumps up and says bike 1 human 0. We laughed thinking where did that come from. The kids say the funniest things. Right now he's begging to ride but there's snow. With my son's new ninja, the two kdx's team green maybe next for the grandson but he's crying for a husky.
Grandson has one, nice little bike but for little guys they are hard to kick over. They need a decomp or magic button. Later george
my 4 year old Hell yeah! I've been doing the same with both of my boys lately. The greatest feeling in the world! my 7 year old. Both have the bug like me.
Went into Yamaha the other day with my 8 and 6 y/o.The eldest threw a leg over the TTR110 and it seemed to suit her well. 3 speed auto with elec start. Can't go wrong. As a long time Kawi rider the electric green of the KLX gets me excited Have fun.
The best feeling in my life is me, my son and grandson riding together. It made my life complete, the torch is being passed.
I'm not sure about your little guys and gals on there very first bike. But it was very hard to keep my 4yo grandson on the bike. When I got on my bike he stayed riding the whole time. When my son joined us the little guy enjoyed it more. If you child shows not much interest in riding at first get someone to ride with them while you assist them till they understand the throttle, steering and brakes. My son installed a throttle limiter. These little bikes are way too fast at first. I feel once these little guys and gals learn there going to be hard to catch or keep up with. The Suzuki ds80 we had did wheelies no problem with adults on it. Make sure your child wears all the safety gear. I post trying to explain and to pass on ideas for the parents starting out with there children riding for the first time. I'm no expert but having all the safety gear means we spent less time in the ER.
My neece also had a DS80 for start learning- good points: starts easy, engine runs strong straight from botton to top- but had to much power. So we reduced the exhaust pipe diameter and i put a throttle stop into the carb. This was only for 2-3 month- after that she got full power... Now- 1year later i sold her kx60 and uprgraded to a TM 85 - lets see whats next!
For sure. I didn't skimp on his gear a bit. He's fully armored. Spent > $500 for his gear. The only chink in the armor is his knees right now. I bought some knee/shin guards, but his kid's boots don't adjust out far enough to tuck them in. I need to find some knee-only guards he can wear.
I ended up taking the top straps for the buckles off the boots so the shinguards/knee pads would work. Works good since there still young and not moving all over the bike yet.
It was an excellent feeling, having my son ride for his first time. He's almost 15 now and rides a TXC250. Enjoy these times.
