I find that I have to press too far down to get the brake to engage. I adjusted the pedal at the rear by loosening the small nut and turning the rod when I first got the bike but after riding a few km's I felt the bike dragging the rear brake so I put it back. I just tried a few more turns on the vertical rod and I'll try that. Is there another way to adjust the brake? What is the clip for at the bottom elbow? Thanks!
No other adjustment possible...nor needed, really. Plenty of scope in the threaded rod. The clip is there to hold the super-thin "fork"-material together and prevent it from buckling outwards if/ when the brake pedal is "hammered" down in an emergency-brake situation or such. Hopefully preventing more warranty claims
Hmmmm, I wonder why the brake was engaging on its own when I adjusted it before then. Two friends have F800GS's and if I adjust my brake pedal to engage the same as theirs then its gone too far and brakes on its own after riding a short while. Is something heating up as I'm riding I wonder... I'll have to play with it.
Lucky you, you have ABS, (automatic Braking System) LOL. If you bleed the brakes you may get some pedal back, and if your fluid is black, it can become clear again.
Be careful with your adjustment! Mine felt a bit low so I reset it to the looser end of the 5mm to 10mm freeplay as per the service manual. Felt really good when I left the house. Three and a half miles later I was calling the wife to bring me a 10mm wrench so I could back of the adjustment enough to unlock my rear brake!! I've since added a 10mm openend wrench to the spartan Husky factory tool kit.
The same happened to me before. It didn't lock up completely but was scrubbing as though I was lightly braking. I had to pull over and get my friend to go hom and get a wrench. I have a small adjustable in my tool kit now. The minor adjustment I made helped some without going too far this time. My fluid is black so I will replace it and make sure the cap is on tight.
I had the same issue on rear break after adjusting the cylinder to met the 5 to 10 mm free pedal play and after some 3 km felt the back wheel breaker. Luckily I had the 10 mm wrench already on the tool kit. This is my third adjustment and I think finally found the sweet spot for the cylinder adjustment. My rear break fluid is also black, what does it means? Is it harmful for the breakers?
A friend has a 2014 F650GS(an 800cc bike). His manual says the fluid will turn black and that its normal and nothing to worry about.
