Seems like not enough to bring back parity, and if it doesn't have at least some races being won by two strokes what is the point? I would love to see different tracks favor different engines, and ideally if the rules were right on any given day two or four stroke could win, or at least both types might end up with a reasonable amount of points by the end of the season. I would think it would take closer to a 175cc two stroke to adequately compete with the 250 thumpers and a 350cc two stroke to compete with the 450s. Do we really gain anything if we get them to approve bikes that aren't competitive and then they never win any races?
For what it's worth, I'm signing it in hopes it will generate enough interest that they will revise the proposal for slightly larger bores but I'm a little skeptical that the two strokes are just 25-50cc away from being competitive.
First this is a good idea, second, it will have no bearing on the ama (GOOD GUYS), third, with the right riders, the 2t will kick ass with these sizes ...
how much hp is a 450 mx bike putting out these days?? How much hp is a 300 2t capable of putting out these days ... on the amatuer level I think the weight savings a 300 2t would give to the ams would make up for a lot towards the end of a race. plus I'm no engine guy but I believe you can pump up a 300 2t to put out some serious power, no??
Here is a dyno for a 2010 300 with head mod + timing mod + new jetting ... (the caviga engine that needs replacing so sales will go up... lol ) http://www.cafehusky.com/forums/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=113044
I might be old and race with a bunch of old guys but my little stock Husky CR 125 did win a AMA National # 1 plate against the open class so it can be done .Just let then race and lets see what happens
Just let'em race sounds good but there are alot of politics stopping that ... I listened to a interview with Mitch Payton and he made it sound like a money issue for sure ... meaning which ever type, 2t or 4t, would win out if it has the most money spent on it ... and no one wants to have to develop 2 kinds of bikes ... Looking at where racing has come from since the 70s to today, we might be seeing the last of it ... It might just be killing it self off with cost ... It needs to re-build in some manner but that can only happen after a collapse or a new ORG comes along ... Here is a real rider on a 125 ... He'll smoke any 250 4t...
I'd like to see it happen but I don't think it will. Its the last thing the big Four would want. In the 70's and 80's they sold a Million offroad Bikes a Year. Today that is less than a 100k. Today they need to develop Quads and Farm 4x4's wich all costs money. Why don't they sell Trials Bikes anymore? Its everything they can do to sell a Enduro version of there Motocross Bikes. Should they develop a 125,250 and open class again? When the Yamaha revolutionized the 4stroke it was a reason to park your old bike and go out and buy a new bike wich boosted sales. A new 2 Stroke will have to have a Technology leap to prompt the same sales perk. From a long term ownership perspective I think everybody would be better off had the 4 stroke stayed in the 60's. A 4 stroke Engine that needs a rebuild at a Dealer will cost as much as a 3 year old bike is worth so a new bike may be sold instead. Today a 10 year old 2 stroke is still compeditive with a new one and if all it needs is new Rings that dosn't do much for sales. The big four all produce other products and a "Green" company is important to total Sales. I'm afraid that the 2 stroke is destined for the nitch Companys, ie KTM- Husqvarna...But that dosn't stop me from rideing my open class 2 stroke with all my freinds modern 450's knowing that they need a good pair of Goggles and Chest Protector on when we get to a Fireroad....
signed FIM is still at the 50% displacement in the rules, however the min weights are different (a little lower for 2T bikes). Have not looked at AMA rules yet. MX1 175-250 2T 98Kg min 290-450 4T 102Kg min
Please go easy on the AMA name calling wont make anything better. In this instance strong lobying from the OEM's would be efective.
lol... U think those guys are watching us for policy? lol ... I'd like to see zero attendance to one of their lovely events ... I think that might get a rise out of them ... That online signup can generate some numbers but it will take many more than on on this site to turn some heads ...
