my te310 is doing about 7k RPM at 47mph. what kind of results are you guys seeing dropping the rear sprocket down from the stock 50t?

I have an 04 TE 250 with a 300 kit. Stock is 13-50. For DS, I went with a 14-49 combination. With this combo, the chain length remains the same, so you can swap back and forth. Bike pulls the gearing fine. Still not a fun bike on anything but short pavement runs.

could be a good combo for me, thanks

i used mine enough for hardcore off road, time to give it a break by doing some dirt road exploring like my old KLR days

If you're just doing light duty back roads and easy trails, a 15-50 combo will enable you to cruise at 50 mph at about ~6500 rpm. (TE 250-300, 04-09).

With my 2008 TE250 and the stock 50T rear sprocket and stock chain, I use 12T,13T,14T, and 15T front sprockets. It is easy and quick to change sprockets in the field, though I usually haul the bike to the trails requiring the 12T or 13T. 13T or 14T for forest service roads, solo or two-up. 14T for two-up scenic sightseeing with bride of 44 yrs. 15T for highways only. I don't do freeways and only limited runs on 60 mph roads. The TE250 is light enough to haul on my motorhome and Jeep Wrangler where I explore a variety of trails and roads in the west and south US in our retirement, usually using a campground as a starting point. This is my kind of dual sporting but maybe not yours and for me, the TE250 works great.

Hey Hipster I run S/M gearing on my TE 450 08 around here at the Isa its fairly flat with some hill that aren't that bad. I run a IMS tank and get 180-200 Ks depending on how you gas it up

I used the gearing calculator to come up with the right combo for the Baja "Trip to the Tip". For that wide open terrain I put on 15/45. It worked surprizingly well, as the motor had plenty of power to pull that gearing. In fact, it could have pulled a 16t if I could have obtained one.

That said, it wouldn't be a lot of fun in tight woods with 15/45. ;)

I only changed to a 14T on my 08 TE 250 and it's worked out OK. Around 50-52 at 7K.

I put a 15 on the front of my 09 450 and it really isn't bad for mixed road and trails.

Just got an '09 te250. I think it's just like your '08. Perhaps you can answer these:
    1) What size spark plug wrench works (can't get plug out so don't know size)?
    2) Where did you get all those sprockets?
3)Did you change to the supplied open air filter base for more airflow? Pull the O sensor? Remove that Calif. emissions thingy? Results?
4)What's all this about setting/changing the TPS & FB settings? What are they?
5 What oil do you use?
    Thanx for any help.

    1) Standard 5/8" spark plug wrench.

    2) I got the sprockets from Bill's BMP Cycle in Salem. Oregon. I highly recommend doing business with this class place. The owner, Bill, is a storehouse of skill and knowledge with high integrity. Brian, another very helpful guy in parts, fixed me up with PBI countershaft sprockets for less than $25 each as I recall. I will go out of my way to do business with them even though they are in Salem, OR and I live in the Seattle area.

    3) I didn't change the air filter base, but Bill may have since he sets up the bikes like the riders want them. I am not touching anything there since my bike runs like a dream now. The 2008 TE250 is different than the 2009. The 2008 comes with a heavy muffler with a built in catalytic converter. I bought the power up kit which consists of a much lighter Arrow muffler with no catalytic. The O2 sensor is removed and replaced with a plug. You might want to talk to those with a 2009 or do a forum search, but I think it comes with the better muffler, but has a catalytic in line that can be removed as well as the 02 sensor..

    4. My guess is TPS is Throttle Position Sensor but I have no clue about FB (maybe Fuel Balance???) and I think both have to do with fuel injection settings. After I installed the power-up kit, the bike was idle challenged. No problem with a guy like Bill. I took it to his shop and he tweaked the fuel injection and generally worked his magic and my engine runs flawlessly. He spent a fair amount oftime getting it just right, all at no charge to me. Buy from this guy and you will be happy.

    5. Bill gave me oil and a filter and a spark plug when I got the bike. He used Torco T-4R, synthetic blend, 10W40. I change my oil very often and have stayed with that so far. I think I will change to full synthetic since my engine is now well broken in. There are countless oil threads on the forum to help confuse me into further indecision. Or I can just ask Bill and he will very patiently educate me yet again.

Many thanks. I'm still puzzled about oil. Anything called AGIP RACING 10W-60 just has to cost $20/quart. I'd like to use a Rotella truck diesel oil but don't know if it's good with wet clutches. Or how to find out. Perhaps when I figure out how to navigate this forum, I'll be able to find some oil advice. Or perhaps I'll call Bill. Thanks again. -Bert

I have an 08 TXC250 and was looking at the clearance for a 15T front sprocket and it looks really close ...

Are there any issues mounting this 15T on the front?

PS -- There are many who use the Rotella oil for their bikes and it has just gotten a rating on the bottle that says it is safe for bikes even though it was safe before the rating was applied for...

http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?p=9263233#post9263233 ... this thread points at the rotella oil

Here is a link to a speed \ gearing chart ... I tried it out on my bike and it is really accurate..

The 15t will just fit on the front with a smidge of room to spare.
