As I was wrenching away on the bike the last day and a half I've noticed one glaring weak point.......or at least what appears to be a weak point on these bikes. The damn kickstand!! I know someone else mentioned this to me but now I've noticed it more. Mine now seems to be almost bending (although bending might not be the correct word) forward to the point where the front of the foot has a slight forward tip up when all the weights put on the bike!! IS THIS NORMAL?? Anybody make a heavy duty aftermarket kickstand?
I agree. It's too short and extends at an awkward angle that gives me a lack of confidence - am half expecting it to fail or the bike to topple over. It's nowhere near as robust or usable as the stand on my previous bike (2009 DRZ400E) and I'm always very careful where I stop the bike (angle, slope & surface). I've heard the stand on the 610 was worse, so given Husky set out to fix it on the 630 it's hard to believe they didn't do a better job. I am not aware of an aftermarket stand.
There is a Husky center stand available, and there is one other aftermarket option that was originally for the 610. The mounts are already there behind the lower engine mount. A couple members on here have them.
The kickstand has been bugging me since I got the bike, especially when trying to use it out on the trails. A couple of days ago the bike landed on its left side after the kickstand slowly sank into the dirt. I decided a hack was in order and installed a set screw near the forward edge of the kickstand channel where it contacts the frame. The kickstand now sits dead flat on the ground, the kickstand feels a lot more solid (doesn't "bend" or flex forward like it did), and the whole apparatus works 100% better off-road. Time will tell if this hack holds up. Next is a bigger foot. I'm thinking of machining a small shelf into the top of the foot and attaching the standard upper/lower plate sort of arrangement.
I have a side stand from the 449/511 that I was sold when I bought my bike. The fit is perfect, but the length is just a little bit too long. The bike is almost vertical on pavement. I will take around an inch out of the middle and weld. I think the stand was around $70.
My stand was awful as well. When I took mine in for the 600 mile service the dealer did some work on it, not sure what they did, but it works better now. I didn't even ask them to do it, they felt it wasn't right and took the initiative.
I have a 511 stand. I've trimmed it to length and it works great (it's too long stock). Final step is to have a foot welded onto it so it will be stable in the dirt.
When I had my 610 I bought an aftermarket sidestand for it - there's a few out there, and if memory serves - from Moose, MSR, and Trailtech? (my memory doesn't always serve) The 630 stand looked like a good stout replacement, but it's too short for the 610. I don't think any of the aftermarket mfr'rs make one for the 630. I'm fine with mine though. A few KTM's in your past will make you appreciate the 630 stand
Stil looking for a solution to a longer stand. There's a guy on advrider that was talking about fabbing some up, anybody heard from him?
This is a work in progress, but here is what I am doing. I purchased a 610 stand and have cut and welded it to a different angle to clear the centerstand, and to swing out so as to not hit the ground when putting it down. It needs to be longer but I'm waiting on steel at the moment. There will be 1/8" reinforcing (cut sections of heavy tube) at the top, welded to the solid steel top piece and to the tube. The plate will be about 2.5" square, rounded, of course. The other key thing is to weld a heavy extension to the back of the left footpeg mounting plate to act as a stop for the stand. Stock it goes much too forward. The wire heel extension will not be needed in the finished product. I hope to have it finished within a week.
