I've had plenty of bikes and crashed lots of times, but never had any issues with shifters bending or breaking... most bikes seem to have them tucked-in better than the Husky. So, I replaced the stock one with a steel IMS folding one, and had a few spills in sand last weekend. The first one almost bent it all the way under the footpeg! The second time, it bent towards the engine. It got to where I was afraid to keep bending it, thinking it might snap.
I bought a steel one, thinking bending would be better than breaking (aluminum), but I need to replace the IMS and I'm not sure what to get.
I know the choices I have from Charlie's list of options... just wondering if I'm the only one with this issue. Haha, maybe I'm the only one falling?

Or, you could have said ride better.
Lets assume nether of those is happening. I do remember some early reports about the TR650 where people were complaining about busted shifters, but that was a long time ago.

I try not to fall, so I am OK with the stock one, but I will say you DO NOT want an aluminum one.
The BMW X-Challenge came with an aluminum shifter, it causes expensive damage to these engines.

Probably more likely poor heat treating of the shaft the shifter bolts too, if it snapped off like that.

More reason for engine guards and stout handguards.

I drilled a few holes in mine to weaken the pedal, after seeing a couple of pics like the above from XChallenges and G650GS's. I prefer to break/bend the pedal to breaking or bending the shaft.

Got 'em... both. Seems that the Strada (and, I assume, Terra) leave the shifter exposed in a fall. I've never had so many shifter issues with a bike. (As an [unfair] comparison, my Beta is on the stock shifter, and I've probably crashed/dropped it 50 times in 3000 miles.)

But your Beta doesn't weigh 400+ pounds.
Hope your Strada knows it's lumps are coming

True. But, I've crashed at much higher speeds on the Beta. The Strada doesn't hold up very well in simple tip-overs, from what I've found. (I started another thread about the front fender that was broken on a 0 mph tip-over in sand. Funny thing is, I was throwing out the broken fender yesterday, and when I dropped it on my garage floor, another big piece broke off- it's just made of a brittle plastic, which is different than the Strada fender, I imagine.)

You have a Strada in Brooklyn? I thought I had the only one around here.

Heh, yep. There was even another one at the PB500... he was one of three bikes that I saw (including mine) with cast wheels.

Oh, and my shifter is folding, but that hasn't seemed to help much.

I had my stock shifter go through my clutch cover. Lucky I was only 10 miles from home, so I rode it back. That oil soaked boot was never the same!

I bought the new parts, but the JB Weld is holding. I have a folding aluminum MSR I believe it is listed for a yz250, but don't quote me on that.
