I need to remove the LT side cover so I can repair or replace it.. There is a second casting that is fastened by the same bolts..It looks like it hold the starter motor.. Is this straight forward ? looking for any advice or tips please..Thanks.
The outer cover comes off by itself, just be carful of the wiring that goes into it. Inner cover and starter will stay on the bike, no worries. Takes a little fooling around to get it to break free, be carful not to tear the gasket so you can reuse it. That's the way the 610 is, yours should be the same. Make sure to keep track of the bolts!!! They're all different lengths.....
Thanks.. figured but wanted to make sure I didn't open up a can of worms.. Is the magnet on the magneto holding it as well??
Yes...... and while it's apart, clean the magnets the best you can, they can pick up a lot metal from the oil and short the impulse sensor over time.
Done.. I had to give the cover a bit of a whack on the backside of one of the 3"tabs" and it started to move.. I have cleaned it all up and have found the small dent/crack from impact...I am debating whether to JB weld for temp repair or take it right apart and have it welded up.. The damage is on the outer edge of the cover so there is alot of clearance for the magneto etc..Any thoughts on that.. Any idea how much for the cover? Thanks again for the info.. I am getting to know my new bike rather well..
Just curious...how did you crack it? Glad to hear you're making progress. If pressed for an opinion I'd say go ahead and have it welded or replace rather than the JB. I know JB works well often, but if you're anything like me it'll gnaw at the back of your mind wondering how long it'll hold up.
Hit it going up a rocky climb.. Waiting for my Hyde Skidplate.. Knew damn well I shouldn't attemt the climb without the skid plate but did anyways.. I will post pictures later.. for anyone that cares.
