The ones that came on the bikes were magnesium. The auto and four stroke used mainly aluminum in the engine so I won't include those in a blanket statement. I have seen on ebay some for sale claiming they were later improved aluminum but who knows I sure don't believe everything someone puts in an ebay listing. Filings from magnesium kind of burn or spark that is how I tell. Do that to your welding rod as aluminum is only soluble in (room temperature) magnesium up to a few percent. I havn't welded on any of the water cooled ones but have an 1988 one which is corroded in the water pump area like magnesium. Yesterday I was reading the 1987 manual and it said to use anti freeze with additives for magnesium and aluminum. The cylinder, radiators, and head are aluminum I believe so where could the magnesium be other than the clutch cover.
