Are the '82 and 83 tanks the same?

I scored an original alloy tank from a '83 430 WR (that is in perfect condition) and wanted to paint it in the '82 style, are the tanks exactly the same? I would hate to paint the tank only to find out the 83 tank looks funny in the 82 style.

I always assumed they were the same.
I have both tanks, one from a 82 420 Auto and the other from a 83 500.

Just looked at them to be sure... shape and size look the same.
The gas cap, petcock opening, and mounting points are the same.

i thought the petcocks were in different places, where one would work on the other but not vice versa. if the tank is perfect it would be a shame to repaint.

The paint is shot, but not a dent in it..... I have an 82 250 XC (avatar) for comparison and they appear to have the same shape, but wasn't sure. I am thinking of building a Grossi replica at some point and would use this tank for the project.

Because the Shocks are further forward on the 83's the Petcock needed to be moved forward a bit. Yes the 83 will work on the 82. I believe the 500's used a larger tank than the 430 and 250.

In 83 the XC/WR tanks went from 2.9 to 3.3 gallons,the CR stayed at 2.7.

There is a good chance that the fuel tap will be further forwards - but that should not matter...

The 83 tanks have the petcock mount positioned about 1-1.5 inches farther forward compared to the 81/82 tanks to allow room for the new 83 side panels. Also as kartwheel68 stated on the wr/xc tanks capacities.

As mentioned. petcock due to 83 numberplate. not shock posistion (as shocks are behind tank)
bottom line 83 will work on 81-82 but 81-82 not on 83 without numberplate interference.

3.1 vs 2.7 noticable on slight height width up near cap otherwise all mounting same.

I'm putting a '82 250cr tank on my '83 250cr now and found if I don't relocate the petcock forward the 1 3/8" to match '83 tank my number plate is gonna have to be cut/trimmed to clear the petcock.
Shocks were moved forward some on '83 frame but it's not the shock itself that's close, rather the the frame tube's, several inches in front of the shock mount.
The tank fits fine but the petcock comes close to hitting frame when your installing the tank if your not paying attention, so there's a risk of busting off the plastic barb fitting tip on the petcock while you force tank down over frame. ( My tanks a bugger tight fit over rubber tank cushion).
And then like I say plastic side cover would need to be modded.

BTW,
My OEM petcock drools gas slowly when off. I'm wanting to fix it.... not buy a new.
Any comments on that? I see a wire clip holding it together so it can come apaert easy.
But is the sealing members inside made of rubber or a fiberous disk-like part?

Are new internal wear pieces available?

It is a rubber like material. If I recall correctly it is about the size and dimensions of a nickel, five cent piece with four holes, two for fuel to go through and two to keep it from moving around. The four holes are just a bit bigger than the largest punch on one of those pliar like punches with rotate-able punch assortment. I purchased a large neoprene washer, somewhat more than two inches outer diameter which has enough material for a number of attempts. I found a petcock to repair with two screws instead of the snap ring like the others I have. It would be a bit more of a battle getting the snap ring one back together. Perhaps the official part designed for gasoline or a replacement is available, I needed it fixed that day. That was earlier this year so I can not really comment long term but at least 6 months no problem.
