This is one that Kelly should like. I have a friend with a 605 ATK who is insistant that it smoke the the 610 Husky. All the specs say the Husky has the edge but not by really big margin. I guess we will soon see.
I have an ATK 490 9slightly shorter stroke than the 605) and although I have not drag raced them I bet the husky will smoke it if it is uncorked. The 490 has good power but kinda tame and slower reving. My 406 might outrun the 610 up till about 50 or so though. It pulls really hard in the mid range.
Dunno but the flat track guys are scooping the Rotax motors up like crazy and building them to big power. I guess they are very durable.
see Ron Wood (not the same name Honda Tokyo Mods guru), the flat track tuner Ron Wood, the guru of Rotax motors "Wood Rotax" he builds fierce SOHC belt drive cam Rotax singles.......would make a cool ATK........to add to the largest collection in the PNW.............
How much of ATK is actually American made? The frame, swingarm, seat……? (Whatever it is, I dig’em ) Justasking
Frame, swingarm and triple clamps. the seat is KTM as are the side panels and fenders. Makes it EZ to get plastic for. Not much "American Made" about this bike.
I go way back to the beginining of ATK In 1984 i got one of the first 560 4 strokes made. When i got to the finish line of Barstow to Vegas there was Chris Crandle and Horst Lighner Chris had just won .I was racing a C&J XR 500 so i went up to Horst and said i want one.I worked in a body shop back then so i painted his car and gave a few bucks to cover paper work and i got a new 1984 ATK.Rode that bike for years until 1989 when the e button 604 came out same deal paint some cars get a bike.this time i got a full race motor in it and to this day i have NEVER ridden a faster bike .the Husky is a much better all around bike but the 604 race motor was tuff I have never found a stright away long enought to hold it wide open Even in Mexico going across diablo dry lake i could not get it to stop pulling Many a fast pro back in the day rode for ATK names like Ty Davis,Paul Krause,Chris Crandle,Ted Hunicutt,Warien Reed,I even saw Dr D do some testing at Carlsbad,When Horst sold the compant to the Utha based company they turned it into a dual sport bike .Every time i see or hear about ATK i think of the old days. Now i am just a old man with a new love Husky CR 125
Thought i better spice this thread up with some pix of my ATK's 406 seems a good displacement size, big bore power without the big bore scare. Need to fix an oil leak and get some miles on this one. Need a current picture too as i have cleaned it up a lot, removed the stickers and added nice hand guards and a X2 headlight. Single sided perimeter frame that holds a bunch of oil. Huge Paoli forks, Ohlins shock, aluminum airbox, Talon hubs, a big comfy seat.
This one is a much better bike than it has a right to be. Not quite as refined and slick as a new bike but seems to get the job done just fine. I like riding it and am not really any slower on it than any other bike. Like all bikes it has it's plus' and minus' but overall a very good bike.
Drag raced my power kit '08 TE610 against a 605. It was surprisingly close. But i beat him. But not by much. ATK's are cool.
I still have my 86 ATK560. I remember when I order it, I called and talked to Horist and he asked what my weight was, what type of riding the bike was and what type of cam I wanted. I drove down to Laguna Beach, CA and picked the bike 6 months later. After breaking a timing belt which bent a valve due to high lift cam I decided to have Ron Wood port the head and install a 605cc bore kit. The bike was always fun to ride and the sound from Rotax was monstrous. I keep thinking I should turn it into dual sport. Scott
I had a 97 CCM Rotax 5 speed. I still believe that bike was fastest bike Ive ever had, just not as quick as my Husky. I bought the CCM new from the distributer, upgraded talon hubs, conventional marzocchi forks, supertrapp megaphone,e-start,860 cam, late 90's YZ plastic, over $8000 back then......blew tranny after 1000 miles. Then I went back to japanese bikes.
Would a 605 be OK while I save for a 610? I had been thinking of a fuel injected 610 for a real dual sport machine but it's a lot of money so it will be a little while before I can get one. A friend mentioned to me that he might be willing to trade me for his Ca legal e-start 605 plus a whole bunch of parts that he has. How manageable would a 605 be up in the Sierras bouncing off rocks on 4wd roads? How wide are the trans ratios for real dual sport duty? Thanks
It is a really good DS bike. I would not want to ride it on hard core tight stuff but it would do it. It is basically a cheap unrefined 610. i bought mine after converting my TE to and SM and realizing i no longer wanted to take the 610 off road and beat it. The 490/605 makes a good off road DS bike for that. Simple, 3.5 gallon tank, comfy seat, good motor.
