So a Baja trip is being planned and since I've never done a large dual sport trip like this before, any adivce would be appreciated. Especially with regards to the Husky. What to equip, bring, spares, tools, tire, etc. So far I've added Handguards, bashplate, Brmoto side, top racks, wuka, powerlet, wolfman/pelican, rotopax.
Do you have a handlebar cup holder to hold your beer? Oh wait, you're not riding in the dirt. Nevermind...
You going to ride down from Vancouver or trailer? Where in Baja and what roads? Camping or Motel? If you are just going down 1 and do the Motel thing, cash and credit card will be enough.
Trailering down, as for roads and where that is still in the works, Where ever the roads take us. Its just a husky and some klr's. Really would like to be prepared for anything. Mostly camping with some hotels. But since this is my first trip of this type I'm not really sure what to bring. Comments that are actually useful would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
I could tell you what I need to take on a trip, but that might not be what you need to take. Simplest thing to do is just construct a few situations, and decide what you will need in each one. So, think about the following situations, and write down what you would need to be wearing/carrying/looking at when in each situation and then combine them into complete packing list. - sitting on the bike riding - stopped on the side of the road for a break - stopped on the side of the road with a problem - sitting around a campfire at the end of the day - cooking - eating - sleeping - any other significant activity you will see yourself doing.
We (wife on a Versys and me on the Terra) will be down there in early November for a 10 day camping trip, riding down from southern OR doing mostly roads and some off the road. I'm bringing tire irons, patch and plug kit and spare tubes + small compressor + tools to do basic maintenance + chain lube and oil for the toolkit just like I would for a trip in the US. If you have done motorcycle camping in warm weather you know what to bring . A steri-pen (or water filter) is a great addition to your kit for some watersouces that you don't trust. Sounds like your bike is farkled plenty for the trip, so I wouldn't stress that to much. I you are worried about getting injuries sign up for one of those: http://www.bajabound.com/before/insurance/travelmedical.php. Use common sense, have fun. Enjoy Baja and the people there. BTW: bring a tow strap for the KLR's
The biggest thing IMO is water. Carry plenty of water for two days of riding, in case you get lost out there overnight (been there, done that). Pack extra gas too. You never know when the next Pemco will show up, and you never know if the backyard mom&pops gas stops will have supply or not.
