the key to a sweet clutch pull and long component life is [clean parts] via REGULAR MAINTENANCE. first- kick all of these guys outa yer shop! then tear the lever/perch down to it's basic components and clean the heck outa everything, EVERYTHING: next comes the cable- get your cable cleaner out and hose out the cable with cleaner (tip- short straws are WAY easier to work with!) keeping the boot above the process: then pinch the cable with two fingers and blow out the goop (two fingers not shown, holding the camera)- always use good gloves for safety sake around air and chemicals!: cont:
next spray in some of this stuff, then, purge it with air again- get all of it out..rinse and repeat, always purge the cable after a spray: next address the cable end, any burrs? knock them down and polish the barrel with #500 and check for whiskers and straighten any kinks with your fingers: next clean up the spooge that comes out of the housing at two points: cont:
next clean out the adjuster raceway- some contact cleaner and a q-tip/tooth brush etc. works well: then put it back together CLEAN AND DRY except for the lever bearing and washers, those get a smidge of water proof grease. keep the grease on the outside of the bearing. grease the screw shank (after dressing it if there's any burrs), not the threads and add a dab of blue locker to the NUT THREADS and clean up any locker you may have gotten on the nut outer surfaces (like i just did- oops). then- go play! the 3hondo gets a wrap for a crappy clutch pull. this cable has been through the wringer since birth (i snapped the stock clutch lever first 10 mins. of use on an ice ride so...yeh...there's that) and i can still pull it in with two fingers- it's very smooth. using this technique ensures long component life and outstandingly smooth clutching. the key is CLEAN parts- esp in cold weather, any lube in the housing will gel and cause it to stick. that's why it's important to purge it anytime you spray something in there. the Motion Pro cable juice leaves a very thin film of teflon goodies in there even after purging so if all is clean it works a treat even in freezing weather....baroooop!
I learned these tricks on the 1980s huskys, they had brutal pull that could be helped with regular maint.
