• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Battery woes Duh my bad

Don't ask me how but I hooked up the new EarthX battery backwards. I said this looks easy enough. They provided some sticky rubber pads to help position the battery inside the box. Well I stuck them on the wrong side, put the battery in and proceeded to hook up the cables. Thought it got a little hot but kept on screwing the bolts/screws down until I started to see smoke. Quickly I reversed the process and duh finally noticed the positive was hooked to the negative and the negative was hooked to the positive. Was probably hooked up for 10 to 15 seconds. I expected the worst as the coating on the outside of the alternator wires had melted. Colored wires were still OK. Turned on the ignition key, all lights came on and started and ran OK. My question is what else could I have screwed up? Don't tell me know one else has ever done this

The bikes electronics should be ok. Most likely victims are the wiring to the reg/rec and the ground wiring. The battery itself might have suffered as well.

  • stator windings, depending on the regulator.
  • starter relay or the diode/resistor that de-energizes the coil when it gets powered off.
when you say "ground wiring" are you talking about the battery lead to ground? if so, maybe replace the positive lead also; at least inspect it for it's entire length.

yes + to - and - to + everything still works as it should. All fuses are OK, hopefully I was fast enough and disconnected the wires before failure

oops- sorry. it was duibhceK that used that term ("ground wiring").

no, I understand what you did. I think you'll be okay. The battery cable's insulation can hide some damage. The copper itself can become brittle and a brighter red. The insulation may show some "bubbling". If you suspect any of that- maybe replace the cables too.

The Lithium battery might've gotten a bit hot.
