Best routing for engine vent hose?

    I was doing some maintenance on my 08 TE450 and notice all the engine oil on the frame near the upper shock mount that had come from the K&N filter attached to the engine vent hose.

    I know the large does oil comes from events (crashes) such as inverted and right-side lay downs.

    I removed the vent hose from the intake boot about a year ago after noticing the engine oil accumulating in the intake boot. I went with K&N filter and located it just in front of the air box. After seeing the oil/dirt mess, there has to be a better solution. I searched the forum, but didn't any different solutions.

    My WR426 had the vent hose routed up near the steering head and down along the down tube where it drip near the skip plate.

    I'm thinking of routing the hose like the WR and installing some type of an inline filter to keep dirt out.

    Does anyone have a better idea or proven solution? :excuseme:

    I don't recall if there is a baffle in the valve cover, if there is it's not very effective.

    Mine's in the bottom of the air box. It's messy no matter where you put it, but in the bottom of the box it just runs down the mud flap. I had it in a couple of other places and oil just ran all over.

    The head needs a baffle, there is none.

    I guess it's time to check the valves and look into designing some type of baffle device.

    The other option may be to route the hose or install trap in a fashion that would allow any oil that enters the hose the while the bike is on it right to drain back to the engine rather than out the hose end.

    i have the same problem.. i dropped the bike on its right side and the engine was still running aprox 30 seconds picked it up and kept ridding the rest of the day.. next day i take the air filter out for a clean and there was heaps of oil sitting in the inake boot. must be somthing we can do bout it.ill switch it off when i drop it from now on...

    On my old 2000 DRZ400 there was a black box that the vent hose went into. Then there was another hose that came out the bottom and went back into the crankcase. And yet a third hose that vented to the outside. I guess there was a baffle in the box and the oil would collect and run back down into the crankcase. The third hose allowed the hot vapor to escape. Nice design in my opinion but of course it just contributed more weight to an already heavy bike. I agree that some sort of baffle or better vent design is needed as having it go into the intake track does not seem to be ideal.

    I put a longer hose on the vent and it is snaked back past the shockwhere I had a small spot for the vent filter. I have the hose angled up over the carb and keep it higher than the top of the valve cover. Almost all the oil drains back into the head. I have an '04 so you'll have to take a good look at your bikes.

    I'm not talking about the normal amount of oil vapor that pass under normal upright conditions. The excess oil condition occurs when the bike is laying on it right side and the top of the engine is level or sloped downward.

    The obvious solution to the problem would be to add training wheels or at least one on the right side. :lol:

    Here is a picture of how it's been routed. I have cleaned up most the oil and it has been a few rides since it has been on it's side. You can see a lot of oil crude on the intake boot.

    bit different to my 05 as the battery is above the filter but i reckon a good mod as the oil goes back and doesnt well up in the filter boot.. nice idea !

    I was thinking that a vent from the center of the valve cover going straight up would solve the problem. If you lay it on either side with the engine running the oil will go to the side and not the vent. I may try that...or not drop the bike:busted:
