My buddy and I have finally comitted to do the Vegas to Reno race this year. We are trying to decide on a bike for it. We are both high B riders. We are looking at a TXC 450, KTM RFS 450 or the tried and proven CRF 450. I am currently on a WR 300 and my buddy rides a TXC 300. We would like to keep it in the Husky family but don't have to. If the other bikes mentioned would be a better choice let us know. Don't see many Huskys in the longer races. What do you guys think? I know this is a Husky site but am hoping for non biased feedback. Thanks
I think you're biggest obstacle is getting a big enough fuel tank. KTM's have more options. I've heard Safari has a large tank out for the EFI Husky's but not sure of the capacity.
I say do it on the TXC. You guys are already husky guys, so might as well embrace it and race it. Safari has a 4 or 5 gallon monster that should be a good alternative to the IMS tank already out there. Besides, there's already a million hondas out there.
I have done Vegas to Reno like 14 times did it many times on a ATK 604 then YZ 400 then YZ 426 then YZ 450 then a Honda 450x All the bikes are the same I want to do it on my CR 125 or WR 250 this year. As for gas you could do it on a stock tank because pits are only 50 miles apart Only problem with Vegas to Reno is no matter what bike you pick it will not be fast enought to keep you from being past by a 100 mph Trophy truck .Which started 3 hours after you did Only time i did not get cought was when we entered 4 stroke pro class and were the 4th bike off the line and finished before dark But we were not at the finish line very long before the first truck came in .Every other year we got passed Fun race but the speeds are just to fast much rather do a good old nasty National Hare and Hound these days
Im with Ajaxauto. All production dirt bikes are now up to it. Husky is just as good as Honda or Beta or Yamaha or ATK. Its the bike prep that matters, not the bike. All the aftermarket stuff is available for a Husky. Hints for Vegas to Reno: -Gear the bike way way up. 15 or 16 tooth front sprocket. -Carry an extra oiled airfilter in a zip lock bag in your camelback. If ya crash in the silt, it will have to be changed. You will see many guys DNF with clogged air filters. -Easy to pit yourself if ya have 2 chase trucks. Every 50 miles. Can be done with one chase truck. (one year i had no pits. Just rode into town and filled up my 9 gallon dakar bike). Pay for pit service is usually available. -Take an aspirin in the AM. -Put electrolytes in your camelback water. -Pull off the course and let the dust settle when you are passed by a truck. They run in packs, and they run via GPS in blinding dust. Very important. Happy to help via PM if you have more questions. Ive done it on various bikes, including Husky.
Thanks guys Looks like we are going to go with an 10 TXC 450. This makes the most sense because we can use the TXC 300's wheels as spares.
Mike Kay ill be contacting you in the future. I'm thinking well need 3 riders for the race. My partner says we can do it with 2. We have no problem with 80 mile enduros but have never ridden 250 miles at once. I'm thinking the hardest part will be keeping your concentration for that long. Plus it will be easier to chase with 3 riders and 1 truck.
it is way fast and watch the rocks....been many guys put down by them... my suggestion is to not put some big a$$ tank on cause you will get beat to death...make it so you can go about 55-60 miles...i rode a CR125 1 year and just carried a quart of gas...made it fine...and before the trucks... if you see or hear a truck get out of the way and stop cause they bring some serious dust.... I wouldnt do the whole 250 at a time...switch twice at least...I did with no switches and with only 1 and it sucks... have fun...Casey will help you out and you will have a blast
